I always try to read at least one "haunted" book around Halloween, and my choice this year was Susan Hill's The Woman in Black, which I greatly enjoyed. Last year I read another novel by her, The Mist in the Mirror, which I also liked. For a modern writer, she does an excellent job of invoking spooky, atmospheric, fog-shrouded 19th- and early 20th-century English settings.

The Woman in Black was adapted into a movie starring Daniel Radcliffe a few years ago. I tried watching it after I'd finished the book, but I gave up on it halfway through. It was wretched.

If you get a chance go see the play. I saw it before I read the novel and it freaked me out.

I'm jealous. I read a book called 12 Hours of Halloween and it was bad. But I read Harvest Home first and really liked that one.

Neither is a haunted house story, so I guess this is

I've seen it. I bought a copy on DVD a few years ago. I agree it is creepy.

I'd love to see The Woman In Black as a play.

I have seen Let The Right One In and Dracula as plays. Dracula had sets and costumes designed by Edward Gorey and it was the neatest play I've ever seen. The sets were actually sketches and the costumes, props and furniture were all black, white and gray, with a rare touch of red (say, a single rose in a vase). Here's an image from the play:

The flared top of Dracula's cape dates from the time when it was first performed as a play. Thin strings were attached to it so that the actor could drop through a trapdoor an instant before the cape would fall to the floor thus making it seem like Dracula had vanished into thin air. I can imagine it must have been a spooky effect in a darkened theater.

Yes, the original 1930s Dracula movie was based on a hit play starring Bela Lugosi.

I saw the Edward Gorey Dracula several times, with different actors playing the title role--including the original version with Frank Langella, who was wonderfully elegant and mesmerizing.

I don't, but I still enjoy haunted house stories. Or maybe it's because I don't believe in them that I like reading about them. Hmmm....

Like ElspethB, I don't believe either, but I sure enjoy a good supernatural yarn.
