A classic tale of supernatural horror, told from the points of view of four narrators. A monstrous fantastic creature, a polymorphous Ancient Egyptian entity “born of neither god nor man,” hypnotic and supernatural, seeks revenge on a British Member of Parliament, stalking him through fin de siecle London. A mixture of gothic horror and mystery, with touches of satiric humor.

This initially outsold Bram Stoker’s Dracula, a similar horror story which was published in the same year, by a multiple of six.

Richard Marsh (12 October 1857 – 9 August 1915) was the pseudonym of English author Richard Bernard Heldmann. One of the most popular and prolific authors of the late-Victorian and Edwardian periods, he is best known now for his supernatural thriller novel The Beetle. Marsh produced nearly 80 volumes of fiction and numerous short stories, in genres including horror, crime, romance and humor.
