Paperwhite 2 Firmware 5.8.11 question: enhanced typeset available ONLY for AZW3?
So last night my Kindle Paperwhite 2 updated to 5.8.11. One of the new features is enhanced typesetting with different degrees of bold.

I was reading some .mobi books I had sent to my Kindle email address but the option to change the boldness of the text wasn't available.

Is sideloading a AZW3 the only way of getting these new features on a book not purchased from Amazon?

It only works for books in KFX format. It will not work for MOBI or KF8 (azw3).

I take that back. Boldness works in KF8. It is the ragged right option that is KFX only.

Also, it does not work if "Publisher font" is selected. You need to use one of the built in fonts.

I think I can get the ragged right edge by selecting left alignment when doing the conversion to AZW3

Yeah it sucks. Personal documents, which require conversion to MOBI, don't even have the boldness feature, never mind the ragged-right thing.
