Oliphant, Margaret: Sir Tom. v1. 9 Aug 2009

In round figures, Margaret Oliphant wrote 100 novels between 1850-1900. From 1860 onwards, scarcely a year went by when she didn't figure in the annual bestseller lists, often having more than one book in the top half dozen.

'Sir Tom' made the bestseller list in 1884, having previously been serialised in the Bolton Weekly Journal, 20 January-14 July 1883.
Sir Tom and Lucy, his young wife, have an idyllic marriage until the arrival of an Italian Contessa and her young ward threaten to resurrect ghosts from his past. The reader is taken on an enthralling journey through the lives of these characters showing, as Oliphant writes, that "life is a horrible sort of pleasure".
This undeservedly neglected novel is highly recommended for anyone who enjoys Victorian literature.

Note: One of the characters, Mr. Derwentwater, is a schoolmaster and is also referred to as 'MTutor' throughout the text, this unusual naming is not a typo.
