Is it true that the Java GUI is not included in the source code? That's what I've heard, and I guess that would explain why there have been no mods or hacks to the GUI, and there being only one custom OS (Duokan). Although I guess it's not entirely necessary, since it is possible to print over the UI like launchpad does, and it is possible to make kindlets, and make other hacks.

sjheiss: Yes, it's true.

In source code from amazon is only code under GPL license used on Kindle,
GUI is not under GPL license.

Well, that's a shame. I guess the Kindle isn't the best device for a beginner to learn to develop for, but it's better than nothing and you could do worse.
