What speed do you read?
I came across this reading speed test hosted by Staples to promote their line of eReaders.
It's quick and very easy to do the test and I would be interested to know what your results are (state if English is not your primary language). There are 3 different pieces of text to try (click on the Start Again button to get to the other 2) and post your 3 scores. Mine was 345, 347 and 392 (on the Wizard of Oz one) words and answering all questions correctly. English is my second language. Last edited by Crusader; 03-12-2012 at 04:08 PM. |

Well, I read on an interstate bus recently... so I guess 70 mph... though I did read that time I took the airplane.
Bet the astronauts get the best speeds -- Bill |

Nice work! You read 186 words in 59 seconds.
3 out of 3. 190 words per minute. I like to savour my reading. |

English as a second language. Didn't note my exact scores, but they were around 400, 590 and 550.
Many times I read lots slower than that, because I too like to savour my reading. Other times I speed read faster than I did in this test. All depending on content. It was fun to test, but I don't really see the point in comparing numbers. Reading is about enjoyment, isn't it? |

543, English is my second language but I think 20 years is long enough to consider me a native right?

I'll have to try it when my eyes are fresh. At 2:49am, they are way too tired to focus properly.

Even though I wasn't consciously trying to change speed, I ended up with wildly varying results--and at my slowest speed, I got every answer wrong! It was the selection I liked least, too. I think that was the main factor--how much I liked or disliked what I was reading.

366 on "War of the Worlds" and 399 on "Alice in Wonderland." I'm not going for speed though, I like to take my time and enjoy the book.

406 on WOTW, 425 for AIW, 419 for WOO; all answers correct.
Apparently, the US national average for adults is 300 with 11th graders higher and college students at 450. English is my first language. Interesting. |

230 WPM ...pretty good for a monkey
I read silently at the same speed as I read aloud. I have no desire to read faster. If forced to do so, I'd give up recreational reading. |

294, 356, 295 (wow, Alice, Oz). English is my second language. I guess I might be faster in the morning. ;-)

I got 227, 275 & 283...stupid dyslexia, I had to re-read a couple sentences in the first and second test.
