Another wonderful book.
I once managed to have a surprisingly long conversation at cross-purposes with a technology lecturer about Pascal. I was talking about the author of the Pensees; he was talking about some computer program.

I remember in the college library actually reading some of this in French. If I remember correctly, I was surprised how much I could understand. It must have a relatively simple vocabulary in the original, or else my memory has warped the experience over the years.

Not surprising as the computer language Pascal was named in honor of Blaise Pascal. Pascal is attributed with having built the first (mechanical) calculator that could add and multiply in order to assist his father - a french tax collector.

In addition Pascal was the first to consider the possibility of Artificial Intelligence.
