S##T just got real.

Dunno why 3M is jumping on the library bandwagon but competition is good.

3M's system looks to be a turnkey solution for libraries. Is this their first foray into the ebook industry?

As far as I know. It struck me as rather odd.

I find this very interesting in light of the recent restrictions on library lending announced by HarperCollins. Perhaps this is seen as better/more control over lending.

Apparently, their 3M Library Systems division is big in the public library space.

that will allow users to browse and borrow digital books directly from their iPads, Nooks and Android-based tablets.
I wonder if where it says "nook" they mean an App on the nook color or if it will actually display on a nook? If it is the latter, then it'd pretty much have to be ADE ePub. Nook color and the rumored Amazon Tablet though, both Android.

I think that competition for Overdrive could be extremely library friendly given some of the recent rumblings in regards to Overdrive Contracts doubling and more in price.

New hardware? I'm not interested. I have a perfectly working reader. If it's not supporting either the Kindle and/or the other epub / eink devices out there (the way Overdrive does) it's dead in the water. Why would a library invest in this proprietary system anyway?

Requiring a new, unique ereader would be a non-starter. Tablet computers only would be sad, too. It really has to work with the single best device for reading...the e-ink, dedicated readers people already own...or I don't think it's worth much.

It runs on iOS, Nooks and Android right out of the gate, and it sounds like you'll be able to check out the 3M device at the library. Chances are they'll expand platforms soon, especially if the demand develops.

Have you ever reacted positively to any ebook-related news?

Imagine, just like a real book! In case you were unclear about the concept: one, if not the chief advantage of ebooks from a library is that I no longer need to go there in person, driving there, dealing with limited opening hours etc. Take that away and it loses much of its appeal.

The chance that I'll drive to the library to check out an ebook is exactly zero.

That's a non-starter. The day my library adopts any system that requires my physical presence to check out an ebook, is the day I start voting against their funding.
