Bondegutten Tørres Snørtevold drar til Stavanger for å søke lykken som krambodgutt. Med sine evner slår han seg opp som byens store mann, men hans forsøk på klassereise spoleres av hans forbitrelse mot "de dannede", en kamp som kanskje koster både ham og hans motstandere mer enn den er verdt.

Første gang utgitt i 1891, har denne romanen dannet grunnlaget for en film i både Norge, Sverige, og Danmark, samt en musical. Den norske filmen kom ut i 1942 under tittelen "Tørris Snørtevold". Regissert av Tancred Ibsen hadde den Alfred Maurstad i tittelrollen, og en ung Wenche Foss i rollen som frk. Thorsen.
