This was in my Kindle Daily Deals email this morning. I dare say plenty of people have very strong views on the subject matter. Feel free to discuss them in the politics forum

Sylvia Plath: A Biography by Linda Wagner-Martin Endeavour Press It has been just over 50 years since Sylvia Plath committed suicide, and her place in American letters is secure. Today she is widely recognized as one of the outstanding poets of the century. When her Collected Poems was published it won the Pulitzer Prize. Her only published novel, The Bell Jar, has become a modern classic. Because Plath drew so heavily on her own life in both her poetry and her fiction, the outlines of her life are familiar to readers. But, like most writers, Plath changed the facts of her life in her writing. In this biography, the first to draw on unpublished journals and letters recently made available, Linda Wagner-Martin examines the ironies and contradictions of Sylvia Plath's life, as well as her achievements. Linda Wagner-Martin has written biographies of Sylvia Plath, Gertrude Stein, Ellen Glasgow, Barbara Kingsolver, and Zelda Sayre Fitzgerald. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00R63H5B6/ http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00R63H5B6/ http://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B00R63H5B6/ |

Free from the author via KDP Select @ Amazon:
The Outspokin' Cyclist by Phillip Barron, a best-of collection of his columns on bicycling (and the ensuing local lifestyle/related issues commentary) from the Herald-Sun newspaper of Durham, North Carolina, which ran from 2004-2008. Here's an article from another newspaper giving more background and a mini-interview, if you're interested. For four years, readers of The Herald-Sun newspaper (Durham, NC) enjoyed Phillip Barron’s monthly columns on bicycling. The Outspokin’ Cyclist gathers some of the best columns together in one volume. With insights into cold-weather bike commuting, urban design, the spiritual solitude of solo mountain biking, and the philosophical problems with drug use in competitive sports, Barron’s columns offer glimpses into the life of a cyclist and a small city’s biking community. The resulting book will appeal to residents of the Bull City as well as those unlucky enough not to know Durham, to cyclists as well as readers who simply enjoy a good story. |

For those of us who were alive then, can you believe that it's been almost 50 years (it's been 45) since the plane first flew? |

Huge Markdown on a Highly-Rated Biography of One of the Greatest Scientists Ever
You may remember that Francis Crick, along with James Watson, discovered the structure of the DNA molecule.
This is a book in the "Eminent Lives" series. Francis Crick: Discoverer of the Genetic Code. By Matt Ridley. Rated 4 1/2 stars, from 16 reviews at the present moment. Print list price $13.99; regular digital price $9.25; Kindle price now $0.99. Harper, publisher. 224 pages. http://www.amazon.com/Francis-Crick-...e+Genetic+Code. Book Description Francis Crick—the quiet genius who led a revolution in biology by discovering, quite literally, the secret of life—will be bracketed with Galileo, Darwin, and Einstein as one of the greatest scientists of all time. In his fascinating biography of the scientific pioneer who uncovered the genetic code—the digital cipher at the heart of heredity that distinguishes living from non-living things—acclaimed bestselling science writer Matt Ridley traces Crick's life from middle-class mediocrity in the English Midlands through a lackluster education and six years designing magnetic mines for the Royal Navy to his leap into biology at the age of thirty-one and its astonishing consequences. In the process, Ridley sheds a brilliant light on the man who forever changed our world and how we understand it. |

It was 99 cents when I posted it. Sorry.
Yesterday, HarperCollins Publishers (or whoever was responsible--HarperCollins is the publisher of the title) flooded the system with markdowns. There could have been 300-400 markdowns, easily. It usually takes minutes for me to review the better markdowns of a day; yesterday it took hours. Pretty much unexpectedly, for me at least, many, if not all, of the markdowns didn't last very long at all. There is one that I posted in the "Christian Interest" thread that I estimate couldn't have lasted more than half of a day! By the time that I got to the end of the list (so to speak), many of the titles, to my annoyance, had jumped back up in price. When a publisher or retailer (whoever is the entity that makes the decision) makes a markdown, it usually takes me several hours, at least, to see it. If I post it on MobileRead immediately, it then still usually takes several hours, at least, on average, for an interested person to see it. With markdowns like this one by HarperCollins yesterday, that may make it too late for the person to get the ebook at the marked-down price. If HarperCollins Publishers thinks that they are endearing themselves to us by dumping this huge number of markdowns on us, for only a brief amount of time, they are mistaken. Because of this issue with one title recently (the one that I mentioned that the post was in the "Christian Interest" thread), I have been trying to review the "list" earlier in the day. I wasn't able to yesterday, however. In case you're wondering, it is frustrating not just to people who see my posts of markdowns and try to take advantage of them, only to find that they have already ended, but also to me. It does take some effort on my part (and on the part of all who make posts of ebooks--thank you to them) to make the posts and it's frustrating when I've made a post only to find that no one was able to take advantage of it. I rarely know how long a markdown will last. I've noticed that ATDrake knows a lot of times. I need to talk with him and find out his secret(s). I've written the above not just for your sake concerning the title that you mentioned, but also to use in future situations and so that the information can be archived by Mobileread for reference purposes. It was 99 cents for a very, very short time. I picked it up because it sounded interesting.
Sometimes publishers or Amazon do play around with the price. They will drop the price for a few hours to increase sales. I think they do this to see how many people click without looking at the price and people buying at full price rather than the discounted price. Just my opinion |
