Thinking of getting this device, as I'm quite tired of waiting for the Archos 7 Android to get a release date, and if the V7 really runs android 2.0 that would probably meet my needs (5" seems like a waste).

Has anyone tried the update? Can you offer any claims on whether the device is usable as a result?

This is not Android 2.0, but version 2.0 of the SmartQ V7 firmware with Android. I believe it is Android 1.6 or something.

Yes, it is Android 1.6, and the current SmartQ Android 1.6 revision is up to 3.0 now.

Yes, Android 2.0 on SmartDevices.com.cn is THEIR OWN version which is not actually ANDROID 2.0. However, there is now Android-3.0 (100331) from SmartDevices which is Android 1.6.


Now, for MY issue.. :P

I recently flashed my SmartQ V7 with JP's Covia firmware (made for SmartQ 5). Little did I consider: this seemed to do a number on my device.

Before I tried flashing the most recent Covia 1.5 (100331), I renamed the file from SmartQ5 to SmartQV7_AD, which is required for my device. The flashing started out which appeared to be working, then quickly jumped from 13% to 100% in a second. I had a suspicious feeling about this, but then wanted to boot into Android to see if the changes had taken affect.

Nil.

It was still the same version I was previously running - SmartDevices Android 3.0 Firmware (100214). So I tried flashing it with Covia's firmware again, only this time the device would freeze while jumping to and loading kernel at offset 4000000. I think this is similar to what happened to ValdikSS.

The deleted partition was a 120MB "hidden partition" which holds a less than 1MB bootloader (tcpboot), and an 8MB Linux kernel. From my experience, but correct me if I'm wrong, I would say this is what loads up the firmware upgrade (pressing and holding MENU and POWER together).

I was not in a comfortable place (and still am not at current time - 100428). After going through the boot process a dozen times, I noticed FWDN in a terminal connected to the device's RS232 port. Looked into FWDN and found a restore tool which, well, restores the hidden partition and loads the bootloader ROM and kernel ROM required for flashing. After messing around for a while, it happened to work. However, I did need a USB A-Male to A-Male for the connection between my PC and device.

Awesome - so now things are looking good. Reflash all 3 firmwares (Wince, Ubuntu, Android). Takes some time, but we're good. Try to boot into Android, no dice. "Cannot find /system/...". Okay - why not? Can't execute any of the required system bins on startup, no shell prompt, nothing. So I try Linux and Windows, they both work. Try flashing just Android again, and while scanning the quick flashing sequence, "Cannot find /dev/ndda6..." blah-blah-blah. So then I try the FWDN tool again, only this time realizing that it only creates the first four partitions, ndda1-ndda4. After a whole sh*tload of reading and indulging, I realize that ndda5 is used by Linux as a swap partition. The command that failed when flashing Ubuntu: "Cannot .../mkswap /dev/ndda5 - no such file or directory."

Son of a b*tch.

So now this is basically where I am stuck. Can you relocated Android's install partitions? Can you somehow get ndda6, ndda7, ndda8 back? This just happened late yesterday, so I should have some answers by the end of today.
