Help choose the May 2015 selection to read for the MR Literary Club! The poll will be open for three days and a discussion thread will begin shortly after a winner is chosen.

The vote is multiple choice. You may vote for as many or as few as you like. If you vote for the winner it is hoped that you will read the selection with the club and/or join in the discussion.

In the event of a tie, there will be a one-day non-multiple-choice run-off poll. If the run-off also ends in a tie, then the tie will be resolved in favour of the selection that received all of its initial nominations first.

Ragtime by E.L. Doctorow, 1975

Invisible Cities by Italo Calvino, 1972

In a garden sit the aged Kublai Khan and the young Marco Polo — Mongol emperor and Venetian traveler. Kublai Khan has sensed the end of his empire coming soon. Marco Polo diverts his host with stories of the cities he has seen in his travels around the empire: cities and memory, cities and desire, cities and designs, cities and the dead, cities and the sky, trading cities, hidden cities. As Marco Polo unspools his tales, the emperor detects these fantastic places are more than they appear.

Frost by Thomas Bernhard, 1963

Thomas Bernhard...Frost, his first novel:

Visceral, raw, singular, and distinctive, Frost is the story of a friendship between a young man at the beginning of his medical career and a painter who is entering his final days.

A writer of world stature, Thomas Bernhard combined a searing wit and an unwavering gaze into the human condition. Frost follows an unnamed young Austrian who accepts an unusual assignment. Rather than continue with his medical studies, he travels to a bleak mining town in the back of beyond, in order to clinically observe the aged painter, Strauch, who happens to be the brother of this young man’s surgical mentor. The catch is this: Strauch must not know the young man’s true occupation or the reason for his arrival. Posing as a promising law student with a love of Henry James, the young man befriends the mad artist and is caught up among an equally extraordinary cast of local characters, from his resentful landlady to the town’s mining engineers.

This debut novel by Thomas Bernhard, which came out in German in 1963 and is now being published in English for the first time, marks the beginning of what was one of the twentieth century’s most powerful, provocative literary careers.

Saville by David Storey, 1976

Winner of the Man Booker Prize in 1976 and referred to as 'the best of all the Bookers'. David Storey won several major awards in the 1960s and 1970s for his works.

Sorry, at the moment anyway I think I must pull out of this month's choice, so I won't vote.

Our lovely dog Emma died this morning, probably of a stroke. Yesterday morning she was running on the beach having a wonderful time and this morning we had to have her euthanised because she would have been brain damaged even if they could keep her alive.

We are devastated as you can imagine and I think I just need to withdraw for a little while. I should be back next month.

Bookpossum, I am so very sorry to hear this sad news. Pets are loved and treasured family members. I will be keeping you in my thoughts.

The death of a beloved pet can be very upsetting. Something similar happened to one of our pets so we have an idea of how you must feel.

Bookpossum, I'm so sorry to hear that about your beloved Emma, and fantasyfan I'm sorry to hear about your pet too. Losing a pet can be very hard. I lost a dog only last month - not the one in my GR avatar but the one I jokingly call that dog's "sister from another mister", Boo. I'd known Boo off and on her entire life and though she technically wasn't mine, she came to live with me for the last many years of her life and she was a great dog. She died very suddenly and unexpectedly; she breathed her last as I was rushing her to the overnight emergency vet. They think it was cardiac arrest or stroke. I hated to see her suffer like that. She was old but I'd thought she might have many years more left in her.
