Scientific papers on Kindle

Hi everybody,

I am looking for some suggestions about what's the best way to visualize scientific papers (like PDF from journals as Elsevier, PlosOne, Nature, Science...etc) on my new Kindle Oasis. I tried to convert them with Calibre but the layout it's all messed up. I actually don't mind to have the text organized in two columns since there is the possibility to zoom in and out if needed. the problem is that I can't highlight or use the dictionary or any other functions that allow you to interact with the text.
Is there any scientific paper reader that figured out how to to that?

Thanks in advance

A larger screen tablet is a better tool for reading such papers. One of the larger screen Fire tablets, or any other android or iOS tablet.

The Oasis has a 7" screen, (unless you have the first gen which was 6") which isn't a great size for PDF, and as you found, converting a PDF isn't a great choice, as the results aren't good.

A large screen device would be the standard answer since it does not mess the formatting of, typically PDF, papers. However large screen devices are usually LCD and loses all of the readability advantages of the Kindle e-ink display.

For PDF papers to be read on Kindle, there are two great options. One is a program called K2pdfopt which reformats PDFs to be enormously more readable on Kindle. A wonderful program. Have a look at some of the examples in this thread.

And the other is consider using koreader (requires jailbreak). It is a much more capable reader than the native Kindle and among other things will reflow PDF documents.

Ideally try K2pdfopt/koreader on Kindle & PDF papers on a larger tablet so that you can see for yourself which you prefer.

Forget abut PDF on a Kindle. It's a bad experience. Use a tablet like a Fire 10 or an iPad.

PDFs for small page sizes are rare, but they exist, and reading them on a kindle is fine.

You have dogmatic opinions. In addition to the valid point j.p.s made above, PDFs work quite well on a 6 or 7" Kindle if they are optimized with K2pdfopt. And there is no small value in e-ink compared to tablet LCDs.

But from what the OP mentioned, they will be standard PDF designed for letter size paper. A 6" or 7" Kindle will not be good enough. Having to post process to get it semi-readable is still not good enough. That's why the tablet recommendation.

The OP mentioned scientific papers. Trying to use an e-ink device with a small screen is going to be disappointing. Trying to convert those PDF files is also going to be a disappointing endeavor.

Have a look at the linked thread if you have time. The PDF optimizer does incredibly well in converting 8.5 x 11 scientific PDFs to 6". The conversions are very well done and can easily be read on a 6" screen. It's really an impressive piece of software.

I always thought that PDF was a big no no for small eink ereaders, but the other evening I was reading a PDF formatted like a newspaper, which I'd obtained from one of the Bronte sites. It dealt with the conspiracy theory that Charlotte murdered her sisters, and had other articles about the state of the medical profession at that time.

I was surprised by how easy this was to read. In landscape, by using a series of finger gestures (not those!) to zoom and move the text, I could read this clearly. Long presses even brought up dictionary definitions.

This surprised me immensely, being the first time I've read a PDF on a touch screen ereader. My 505 has a reflow feature, which would mess up any scientific paper. So I wonder if those saying that PDF's can't be adequately read on a kindle have tried doing so lately.

Even if you read in landscape on a 6" screen, There is a very good change that the images could be cut off because they don't fit full on screen.

Not true if you reformat the PDF. Really big images will be reduced to fit on screen so you see the entire image. And you can zoom in for detail, no different that the need to sometimes zoom in even on large tablets that fit an entire 8.5 x 11 page.

When you reduce the size of the image, you could be reducing the detail and then zooming may not be good. It's best to just read the PDF on a device that handles it properly and an eInk Kindle is not it.
