If you buy from Kobo and you have DeACSM and DeDRM installed, any eBooks you buy with DRM can be download directly into calibre to have the .acsm processed, ePub downloaded and the DRM removed. It's that easy. Plus if you do want KePub to read, you can get your ePub converted to KePub when you send your eBooks to your Kobo using the KoboTouchExtended driver.

Why buy from Kobo if they also DRM their books? Buy directly from the publisher’s or author‘s website, you may be able to get a book that comes without any DRM in the first place.

Kobo has DRM-free books too, if the author or publisher didn't want DRM on their books. |

Considering that I have downloaded epubs from Kobo using either the .acsm file or directly for non-DRMmed ePubs that arrived with the Kobo spans, etc. in place as they would be for a .kepub.epub and I saw no differences using multiple apps/devices to view those ebooks, I'm not worried about the source.

Looking at my last 60 purchases from Kobo, 19 of them were DRMmed and 41 weren't. If you use the download link on Kobo's website, a DRMmed ebook will download an .acsm file while DRM free ebooks will download the ebook file. |

Since you are a fan of ModifyEpub, try running ModifyEpub with the Strip Kobo DRM remnants enabled. Or you could run a simple saved search in Sigil to remove them.

Why bother when I can just download an ePub without the extra code? If I want it as a KePub, I can do so when sending it to my Kobo.

Why would ePub be better than a kepub from which the extra divs and spans have been removed as an archive format? Since you have mentioned using ModifyEpub rather often, clicking once on an extra option is hardly going to cause you endless hours of work.

Because it's more work to have to convert KePub to ePub when I can get the ePub directly. With Modify ePub, I have to find the settings that deal with KePub code and then when done, I have to restore my settings. I just go with the ePub. It's easier.

Why do you have to restore the setting? Leave Strip Kobo DRM remnants enabled and if the ePub is a kepub, the Kobo spans will be removed, it is not, the setting will have no effect. Easy peasy! Last edited by DNSB; 01-11-2025 at 10:35 PM. |
