Hm, seems like DeDRM does not include the code to remove LCP DRM? https://github.com/noDRM/DeDRM_tools/issues/18

Or is that available from somewhere else?

It also requires a LCP Passphrase. Unsure of what that is or how one obtains it.

The repo got a DMCA request to remove LCP support. Unless you downloaded DeDRM before January 2022, you can't remove LCP.

Also, personally I think library or subscription loans shouldn't be deDRMed, though I think DRM should be illegal on sold content.

I have to use an App for my local library.

It would defeat the purpose of a library loan. It makes one 'return' the book when it is due and reminds one that one does not own the book. In this case, the DRM is a feature. I read the book and then return/delete the file. No need to worry about backups or taking up space on the hard drive, cataloging it, etc. For books I own, it's a different story.

Things on the internet tend to stay on the internet. There are other legitimate repositories where one might find the older DeDRM plugin that contains the functional python script for LCP DRM removal. It's not a difficult search.

I, personally, don't think that library loans should only be available in a pretty useless app for "accessibility" reasons. How accessible is it to heavily restrict access to the book?

How is it more accessible compared to letting people download the file and read in whatever reading app they want?

Sure, but you run the risk of the code having been tampered with in some way unless you have the skills to validate it yourself, now that the original source is gone.

In an ideal world I'd agree. Loans are a complex issue. I also wonder at who in our Library system in Ireland actually tests the apps before choosing a supplier.

In general many Apps seem worse than 1992 Windows shareware.

I bought an e-book using LCP DRM from a local online bookstore. I downloaded the license file (.lcpl), opened it in Thorium and copy-pasted the passphrase. It downloaded and opened just fine.

I then tried to do the same in Calibre, having installed an extension for lcpl download support and an old version of DeDRM that's supposed to support LCP DRM removal (I added the passphrase in the DeDRM plugin settings). The epub downloaded just fine from the .lcpl file, but couldn't be opened since the DRM wasn't removed.

I also tried downloading the epub file through Thorium and importing that into Calibre. Also didn't work.

I read that the DeDRM plugin does not support removing the latest version of LCP DRM. Can be good to know when buying e-books from stores using it. I definitely won't be buying from the same store again, since that would require using their app or Thorium to read it.

I'll just boycott any store or library that only offers books with LCP DRM until the new version is broken.

LCP won't be broken. The problem is that Readium will fight it. So it's not worth the hassle to try to break it.

So an organization that's all about open source, an open web, etc. will fight people trying to make things more open and accessible to people?

And Adobe being the worst kind of corporation isn't doing that?

Wouldn't surprise me too much, since a lot of the open source movement consists of utopian idealists who want to make the world a better place, but only in a very particular and perfect way that you have to adhere to to the letter. Otherwise you get harassed and sent to the gulag.

Oh, well. If it doesn't get broken, I'll just ignore it and avoid giving any money to anyone using it.

Proper and true open source should not be using any sort of DRM.

Very true. One should always be careful with downloads. Calibre even pops up a warning when installing plugins from files. In this case, it's one python script that will be different from the placeholder file in the Github versions of the DeDRM plugin.

Does Kobo have plans to add Readium compatibility to its ereaders? Right now the OP will have to get something else to read the books. I don't see Kindle adding support for this, since it is epub, and I have no idea about Nook. I'd hate to see dedicated ereaders shut out, especially if LCP usage increases.

I agree.

It's probably a case of selling one's soul to the devil for fame and glory, aka widespread adoption of the standard.

There are no known plans for Kobo to add Readium compatibility (aka LCP).
