If you want to ensure a book's author gets a fair shake buy the paper edition from an owner operated bricks and mortar bookstore. If there's no paper edition it's probably not worth reading

And there have been several books with no paper edition sold in physical bookstores, that I've enjoyed. Maybe I just have bad taste. ![]() |

You're coming from the world of high-speed, reasonably priced home internet. The entire world is not that fortunate. |

@PeterT
What is reasonably priced Internet? (And what do you consider reasonable performance?) My old location has Bonded Pair DSL (90M on a good day) for $125/mo (includes phone service) Here has 400M cable for $125/mo (includes phone) There is a coil of Fibre on the pole at the end of the street. It has been there for well over a year Ads say Frontier Fibre is $60/mo for now (limited time) but no phone (I can get a prepaid cell phone that works with my DECT base station for $150/Yr) OTOH I helped a friend at his business, they had the same router model but their speed was 56M (and more $ because it was a 'business' ) |

So I know what it's like to wait for data to download. I used to use Usenet over dial-up. Most people do not have an Internet connection that's too slow to download an image heavy eBook. And if they do, they can go to the library and use their Internet connection. |

Most urban/suburban people in your particular country, is what I'm guessing you mean. The world's a bit bigger than that.

No other company plays these games. They do not assume you have such a poor Internet connection that you need your eBooks damaged. |

I tried on K4PC and it worked, even with the latest Kindle version, which was updated automatically (2.0.0 build 70269). All books I tried can be opened, including those with the KFX Input plugin... Thanks. metatech |

We also have a system where profits seem to out weigh availability (even when location is not the limiting factor). Decades ago, the US had to create the REA to even get electricity (and landline phone) to farms. 30 miles from here, a resident of a canyon 3 miles from the highway and closest power pole) has no Grid power or phone. No Cell service, Radio is sketchy, and no TV. He has Solar and a Generator, uses a $atellite phone in emergencies. Yes he could pay the utility to run lines those 3 miles (I hate to guess how much when it is over $10K just to add a 'new service' line from the pole in the back yard ![]() |

Starlink would fix him up for internet & phone (through a VoIP provider).
