Recommended device for an android tablet user

I am currently using Pipo P1 Android tablet (retina screen, 9.7'') for e-book reading .
It's a nice device, but it has 2 problems when it come for book reading - first, it's quite heavy and second, although the text is nice and smooth,recently my eyes begin to hurt when I read, so I thought of buying a dedicate device just for reading, but I do not know if a reader with my demands exists.

I want the device to support the following:

1) It should be lightweight

2) It should support all the well known formats - PDF, EPub , MOBI and DJVU,
And that I could transfer all my files to the device without the need to use some kind of store app like in Amazon (not vendor locked). I don't care and even would like, if it won't contain any WIFI connection at all - I just want to load my books and read them without distraction from Facebook,youtube etc...
and support in file saving annotations and lines markering.*

3) It should contain at least 12Gb or has the option to use SD card for expansion.

4) It should be at least 9''+ screen size (I have no experience using an e-reader so maybe a smaller screen is better ?)

5) That my eyes wont hurt while using it

I understand that most of the dedicated e-readers using E-INK and the reading experience is much like reading a regular book (without a backlighting) - from your experience , is it true?

I also have magazines that I want to read - is there a colored e-ink tablet? it will be a plus, otherwise I think I will leave the colored stuff to the tablet.

6) Budget - anything from about 400$ and lower

7) Touch device will be much preferable


I Hope something like this or as close to this exists.

To sum up, what I want basically is a hardware of a kindle touch with a striped version of Android OS installed on it.

No e-ink reader I know of is vendor-locked, in the sense that you can transfer all your DRM-free books to any of them without needing to buy from the vendor. Kindles don't support epub, but converting your epub files to Kindle formats with Calibre is pretty trivial. On the other hand, only Kindles support books bought from Amazon directly, for any other e-ink reader you have to convert those the same way you convert non-Amazon books for a Kindle. Even if a reader has Mobi support, it still won't support any Amazon books without converting.

To my mind, format support doesn't matter if you use Calibre. You can get whatever e-ink reader you like and buy from any vendor you want. If you don't want to convert, then you have considerably fewer e-readers to select from.

I'm not really qualified to answer your questions, but it doesn't look like you're getting a whole lot of response ... so (for what it's worth) ...

1) A 10" eInk eReader will be lighter than a 10" tablet -- but probably more than two time heavier than a 6" eInk eReader.

2) If you want to support all eBook formats, you're probably looking at a Android eInk eReader, something like Onyx Boox and those like it. You'll find more information about these under the Android Device forum ... https://www.mobileread.com/forums/fo...play.php?f=225

3) See the above forum. I'm pretty sure there are Android eInk eReaders that would meet your memory requirements.

4) I like a smaller (5" or 6" screen) device myself but those who have larger screens often fall in love with them. A 6" screen would cut the weight down from about 15 ounces to six or seven ounces -- so a pretty big weight savings. You might want to look at a 7" or 8" screen as a compromise between weight and size.

5) An eInk device isn't exactly like paper (even though they advertise them that way) but (for my eyes anyhow) it's much easier to read on an eInk eReader than a tablet. Reading on my phone or tablet is something I only do in "emergencies."

6) A 10" eInk eReader (the Android ones that you'll find in the above linked forum) seem to have a top-end of about $400. You should be able to find them a little (maybe more than a little) cheaper than that.

7) Almost all modern eInk eReaders are touch devices. Most are now capacitive touch devices (where once Infrared ones predominated).

I think you should keep using your tablet for magazines and heavily illustrated PDF:s. As you seem to consider. And just get a nice e-ink device to read pure text like novels. That is the way I went, and it seems to work fine.

Yes, a good e-ink device is much easier on the eyes than a normal tablet. Not quite as good paper but good enough for extended reading. I think my Bouye Likebook Plus is big and good enough. 7.8" and 300 ppi. But there are many other options.

And learn to love calibre, that will make your reading much easier...
