Thumbs up ePub tools and reading software submitted here.

This thread is intended to collect pointers to ePub generation/conversion tools and ePub reading tools that have been submitted by MobileRead users. It is intended to provide only links and brief descriptions. It is not the place to discuss tools or the need for tools.

Today, many nice tools have drifted off the first page and users can have difficulty finding them or even knowing that they exist. To make all of these threads into stickies makes the sticky section way too long and using subforums means that new posting don't show up in the main thread where most people look. This is a bit experimental and if it is not abused with off topic posts I think it will be a useful reference for users.

Tool makers should post their tool first in its own thread with a link for downloading the tool in the first post. Then they can add their tool with a brief description to this thread to aid people in finding the tool thread. There is no reason that multiple tools cannot be in the same post as I have done. Secondary titles can be used to identify the tool.

The rest of this thread is reserved for posting links to tools. Thanks for you cooperation.

Dale

Tools in other MobileRead forums.

The Sigil ePub editor can be found at: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=203 It is a Cross-platform (Linux, Windows and OS X) tool.

The Calibre conversion and reading tool can be found at: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=166 Please post any Calibre specific questions and comments in that forum instead of this ePub one. Note that Calibre now includes a full editor that rivals Sigil although the approach is a bit different.

Writer2ePub is ePub creation tool and can be found at: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=230 An OpenOffice extension to create ePub documents with OpenOffice.

EPUBReader is an ePub reader and can be found at: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=211 An add-on designed to read books in ePub format from within the Firefox and SeaMonkey browsers.

Writer2xhtml (W2X) is an all-round converter from odt to EPUB and a part of the writer2latex family. It is meant to be used as a graphical extension integrated either in LibreOffice or OpenOffice. It's open-source (LGPL) and multi-platform like LibreOffice.

There is a French support thread on this forum.
https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=119418.

Current version is 1.2. Coming version 1.4 (in beta stage) will support HTML 5 and allow the use of inline SVG images for vector graphics (clipart, drawings, charts).

exlibris - add a nice ex libris to your EPUB eBook!
Hi all,

AlPe would like to share a Python script that he has developed to add an ex libris to a previously created (not DRM-ed) EPUB. It has both CLI and GUI versions in English and Italian. It has been tested under Debian Linux and Windows.

glyphIgo is a swiss Army Knife of fonts in ePub. It can do:

1. List all Unicode characters used in an EPUB file or a plain text UTF-8 file.
2. List all Unicode glyphs present in a TTF/OTF/WOFF font file.
3. Check whether a given font file contains all the glyphs needed to properly display the given EPUB or plain text file.
4. Minimize a given font file, that is, create a new font file containing only the subset of glyphs of a given font that are contained in a EPUB or plain text file.
5. Convert a font file from/to TTF/OTF/WOFF format.
6. Export one of the above lists of Unicode characters as an EPUB file, for quick testing on an eReader.

epub validation tools

epubcheck (the "official" java tool)

There are other tools out there (some commercial, but IMHO they're not any better than those listed above, just because they have a price tag!) - generally, check the file dates, many, if not all of them are old and not maintained!

Kim

e-Book Tools is a Word add-in with a collection of all kinds of procedures that will help you in the process from OCR to ePUB. One of the procedures actually creates an ePUB for you directly from Word. It must be touched-up, but gives a solid base. It can be discussed at https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=213372
