Equiano, Olaudah: The Life of Olaudah Equiano. vol 1, 19 May 2016

Olaudah Equiano was born in west Africa in about 1745. He was captured by slave traders in about 1755, and sold in the West Indies. In 1756 he was bought by a Royal Navy officer who forced him to accept the name Augustus Vassa which he used for the rest of his life, including on his wedding certificate and his will. He was taken to England in 1757, stayed with the officer's sisters, and learned to read and write English. The officer sold him again, and he worked in slavery in ships and later in the West Indies for a master who allowed him to trade for himself. He purchased his freedom in 1766, and returned to England in 1767 where he worked as a hairdresser, and as a seafarer and trader in Turkey, Greece, and Italy, and as part of an expedition to the Arctic in 1773. After two more years in the West Indies he returned to England.

In 1786 he became involved in the movement to abolish slavery and became a prominent member of the 'Sons of Africa', a group of 12 black men who campaigned for abolition. In 1789 he self-published this autobiography. He travelled widely promoting the book, which became immensely popular, helped the abolitionist cause, and made him a wealthy man. It is one of the earliest books published by a black African writer, and went through nine editions in England and the US. The autobiography also deals at some length with his conversion to Christianity.

In 1792 he married an Englishwoman, Susanna Cullen, and they had two daughters. Olaudah Equiano died on 31 March 1797, about ten years before the slave trade was banned in England.

All of his biographers refer to him as Olaudah Equiano, and he has his own website at www.equiano.org/index.html

The source text for this edition cannot be mentioned as I have corrected typos, used modern forms for the many scripture references and modern names for addresses, and made changes to spelling, punctuation, and hyphenation using oxforddictionaries.com. I have omitted the hundreds of names of subscribers to his book, and the many supportive letters and reviews included in several of the editions.
