It doesn't have to be sexual. I felt terribly self-conscious when I traveled by public transport with a huge book on thermodynamics in my hands.

Sometimes it's even a personal thing. I would hate to be asked "what are you reading?" if I am reading a doctor recommended book about something I am going through personally.... or a trauma I have faced and want to read similar, but don't want to be sharing it with a nosy stranger or acquaintance....

I read fiction because I think I humanate* from it. So, I sometimes force myself as if the book is my homework for tomorrow.
* to humanate: to become more human, rationally and emotionally. |

I read fiction because reality is stupid and hopeless.
Also some horror fiction is interesting and can be riveting for whatever reason. |

I don't like reading political books in public because I don't want to get into those conversations. There are lots of good reasons to have what you're reading hidden. I could see the same issue for religious books.

If I wanted true nonsense Id just watch the news. I read to escape, forget about the crap of the real world. Just for an example, Ive stopped caring who wins the next US election, Ive become apathetic to it, I just want to stop hearing about it. With fiction I can escape to worlds where i don't have to worry about it.

I don't think there is. If memory serves me, some five or maybe ten years ago a PhD thesis was written about how to create such a device entirely based on publicly available sources. The government forbade the thesis to be published.

If it's just for kicks you could just print a cover with the title, and enjoy reading a book that you really like while freaking out your fellow passengers. |
