How many different Kindles are there?
(That's somewhat rhetorical.) It looked like there were tons of them on Amazon. Kindle with this. Kindle with that. Then different versions of Kindle Paperwhite. So when they had Black Friday sales and the Kindle advertised was $49 and the PW advertised was $99 is the assumption that they were just the most basic models?

Currently there are three models:
Kindle, a/k/a Kindle Basic, what we call KT2 ( Kindle Touch 2) Kindle Paperwhite 2 Kindle Voyage The KT2 is the basic model, the PW2 is the regular model, the Voyage is the premium model. Some are SO (Special Offers) which is a $20 subsidy toggled via software -- it is still the same physical device. There are older models as well, which aren't sold anymore but can still be found used. Original Kindle, a/k/a Kindle 1 Kindle 2 Kinde DX (Occasionally more pop up for sale by Amazon) Kindle Keyboard, a/k/a Kindle 3 Kindle Touch Kindle Basic, a/k/a Kindle 4 Kindle Paperwhite 1 |

I don't think ads on the screensaver would be so bad, but on the bottom of the page while I'm reading I wouldn't like. Do other ereaders have ads too? And what about Kindle PW with 3G? Is that almost like being online? With the regular old Kindle all you can do is go to Amazon.com? |

They actually charge you $20 less, to accept the ads.
The ads opnly appear as the screensaver, and on the bottom of the homescreen when you are NOT reading. During reading, there are no ads. The Kindle PW with 3G can view and download from the Kindle Store, lookup words in Wikipedia/Big Translate and share books via Facebook/Twitter via the in-book popup, and mark your book's status on Goodreads. That is it. Amazon is not subsidizing your generic internet browsing experience. |

I think there were two different DX models and definitely two different "Kindle Basic" (Kindle 4, non-touch) models. One (2011 model) was silver (graphite) and one (2012 model) was black. The black Kindle 4 had slightly sharper fonts and was a bit faster. |

I didn't realize they changed more than the color.
I knew about the DX/DXG. |
