If the LastReadPosition and Bookmarks were used by other viewers and respected by editing software I would give that a thumbs up.

But, AFAIK that data is not used by any other viewers. What's more, if I edit and save a bookmarked EPUB in Sigil, the bookmarks and last read position are lost. My guess is this probably happens if other software rewrites the EPUB.

Given the data is a) peculiar to the calibre viewer and b) not respected by other software, then I'm not sure your argument is entirely valid.

You may well ask, so what's the alternative. I admit I can't think of any that are particularly robust or portable between different viewers and 'editors'. If the viewer data was stored elsewhere (database, metadata.opf, viewer.dat) and then the book content was changed, the result would be that viewer data would be out of synch with the content.

The calibre book editor has no provision to use the bookmarks that I set in the calibre book viewer, as in go to them. And the bookmarks are not 'adjusted' to reflect the changes I make in the book's content files. So after an editor session I can see the bookmarks I previously set in the viewer, but they don't seem to work, as in go to them. But the editor isn't fully developed, so perhaps a future version will address this issue

The ebook world is eons away from being within a bull's roar of the Code Complete nirvana

I stand humbly amidst the Calibre experts - however to answer the above, it bugs me that the size changes as I use an inverted dupe filter to quickly see if there are any ebook files I havent added to calibre yet (searching drives for pdf, mobi, epub)....because Calibre changes the epub file size, the method gives me false positives that mean I sometimes have to search Calibre to see if a book has been already added, considerably slowing the process .....at least I know the upside of the downside so to speak now......

You revived an ancient thread to whine that you need to uncheck an option in the ebook viewer preferences to stop the ebook viewer from adding a file to your ebook and changing its size? Did you even bother to read this thread?

This is, why I don't use sigil for editing an existing books without checking it with calibre's editor before. You can never know, what else you loose if a file is not mentioned in the manifest. This is a problem as well for books with soft DRM where the license information is in a separate file. After you open ans save the modified book with sigil you even do not recognize that you loose your license information.

For some it seems to be a feature, but if I know about the special mannerisms of programs, I know the way around them

Other options to disable to make sure ebook-viewer does not modify ebook file?

I apologize in advance for commenting on an "ancient' thread but...

for reasons too, i too need to have my ebooks unmodified by calibre's ebook-viewer.

Besides the "Keep a copy of bookmarks/current page inside the e-book file, for easy sharing" is there any other options we need to be aware of and need to disable/uncheck to make sure calibre's ebook-viewer does not modify the ebook?

No. You can easily proof yourself on this

Make a littel sample book with the editor and open it then with the viewer and check then if there is any change (or use an existing one). In addition there is the possibility to check two versions of a book (or compare files). https://manual.calibre-ebook.com/diff.html
