Offered fwiw: I would think an app would be far less costly and time consuming to maintain compared to ebook for this. Because this would be absolute bleeding edge for ebook, but practically quaint as far as an app is concerned. And there are only a handful of OSes you might need to cater to but lots of relatively common e-readers. Heck I’ve never even heard of Moon Reader outside of the many posts on this forum by people asking why some book is broken on it.

Absolutely. Once you go beyond ordinary reflowable epub2 (which uploads to Amazon KDP just fine or converts to dual mobi for Smashwords Kindle downloads) forget ebooks. Too many ereaders and apps will fail.
Fixed layout and only static images: PDF.
Anything else clever needs an App. Basically Android is 85% and iOS is 15% It's not even to hard to make most of the Android source work on Windows or Linux as a Java application. Or port to QT for Mac OS, Windows and Linux.

Actually, Android is 74.43% and iOS is 24.99%. That is worldwide. If you want just the US, then Android is 40.09% and iOS is 59.71%.

Depends on which month and whose numbers. As for the US, the last figures I've seen for year to date 2020 were 51.2% Android and 48.2% iOS. Which doesn't leave much for anyone else. This is the smartphone market numbers that I found.

OTOH, if you start including tablets, iPads had 73% of the tablet market in Sept, 2019 and still held 59% in Sept., 2020. Android held 27% in Sept. 2019 and now held 40.8% in Sept. 2020. The remaining 1% if where you find Windows, Linux, etc.

What I find most humourous is that at one point, the most popular publisher in Apple's App Store was Google while Facebook was the most popular publisher in Google's PlayStore.

OTOH, if you are into money, it appears a rather large chunk of the Android phone market is engaged in a death march to the lowest possible price. This may explain why many low end Android phone manufacturers have the lifespan of a mayfly. By comparison, Apple captures about 31% of the smart phone revenue and about 65% of the profit (add in Huawei (13%) and Samsung (17%) profit shares and there ain't much profit left for other manufacturers to divide).

Those numbers will change as the move to 5G and higher end Android phones continues.
