The general health problem of obesity is basically because we're all sitting too much staring at these screens

The problems start when someone comes in and says eink is the ONLY way to read because it won't harm your eyes, whereas, LCD/LED/Color whatever WILL cause harm to your eyes.

That is complete and utter BS, and needs to stop being spread around.

Our eyes change with AGE, this is a fact of life that cannot be ignored, but many will do so due to vanity. Any study they do on someone who has been using computers for years would be inconclusive at best since our eyes deteriorate/change with age. There is no way to prove it is from staring at a screen.

Read on what you like, I prefer my pc monitor over all else. But be willing to accept other peoples choices.

I sit upright in front of a computer monitor most of the day at work. That's ok because I'm up and down doing other things. But I can't imagine being comfortable enough sitting in front of my computer at home to want to do any extended reading there. Do you have a really nice chair or something?

We've had tv's for 60 years or so. Computer screens for 40.

Longer than most people think!

TV screens 85 years (Europe, 80 in USA), though the CRT is a Victorian era invention over 120 years ago, simultaneously in England and Germany.
First computer screens probably about 60 years ago.
LCD screens about 40+ years (mono reflective for a long while). Plasma screens about 45 years, though only amber. Colour was much later.
Mobile phones for about 40 years, though first demonstrated in 1973.
Smart Phones (mono till about 2002) over 20 years (1998)
Apple iPhone was very late to the party and the ONLY innovation was the cheap data package. All bought in tech. Till then only rich people or companies could afford data. The iPhone originally was slower than competition as it had no 3G. Also the capacitive touch had existed since 1980s, but it's dramatically poorer resolution than resistive. Resistive was used because it allowed annotation and handwriting. Mobile phones even had fax before iPhone, which with resistive input allowed written Asian language messages.

So we'd know if people were going blind. Even the X-ray scare of CRTs proved false. Glass too thick.
Staring into a Radar waveguide will give you cataracts, not cancer, as it's about 800W average and 10k W peak power. The microwave oven is essentially using the same kind of device as WWII microwave radar, a Magnetron diode valve.

Yes, we've had TVs and computers for a long time, but TVs are usually watched from across the room, and computers from a couple feet away. Tablets and smartphones, which are held closer to the eyes, are a much more recent invention. Young people now are the first generation who are growing up using these devices. So I think this is why some people in this thread are saying it is too soon to know if longterm use of these devices from a young age will have an effect on the eyes.

Second gen or even third.

Colour LCD laptops used often 1' away filling most of view are over 20 years ago. Late 1990s.

LCD replacing desktop CRTs was later.

Not to mention it doesn't require decades of data to determine whether damage is occurring or not. Not sure where that notion came from in the first place. Is it more likely that high usage causes absolutely no discernable damage until decades have passed and then WHAM!, or is it more likely that said damage is cumulative and could be tested and proven/disproven with data covering far less time?

Click bait and a strawman. Did that person from Hisense really say that everybody was going to go blind?

Hyperbole and sarcasm. He said it was a “health issue”. And we’d have LONG AGO figured out it was an eye health issue to stare at devices for hours a day because all across the world, billions of people have ALREADY been doing so.

You do understand that reading itself stresses your eyes....even just reading books. You can get eye fatigue, headaches and the like. But it doesn’t damage your eyes. You stop reading and your eyes feel better.

People are debating this issue as if we should or shouldn’t read on devices because “xyz health concern”....as if.....nearly the whole world hadn't ALREADY been staring at devices. We aren’t dealing with the unknown or what might happen.

If there were a general health risk to reading/staring at devices....we’d ALREADY have seen the results.

So, he never mentioned widespread blindness?

What massive world wide out break of “eye health problems” has already happened? Millions turned color blind? Tripled increase in the rate of retina detachment? What?

You don’t need “scientific tests” with 5 subjects or 50. There is a world wide adoption by billions. No need to subject rats to 360degree bright lights 20 hours a day for months (yes, that was a real study)....in order to predict that there MIGHT be a problem with reading on devices.

The horse is out of the barn. There should be a pandemic of SOME KIND of eye health damage being reported across the globe.

I will assume that he didn't mention widespread blindness then, verifying my comments re: strawman and clickbait.
