PRS-500 "upgrade path"

On August 13, Sony employee Valerie Motis wrote on the Sony Electronics blog http://electronicsblog.sel.sony.com/...95140802902467 this:
Quote:
The Sony eBook Store changes to EPUB format

eBook fans, we have heard you-

To help stop the confusion among all the digital book formats, we plan on converting our eBook store to the industry-standard EPUB format by the end of the year. By adopting an open standard, our eBook store will be compatible with multiple devices and our Readers can access multiple sources for content. Right now, our current Reader devices support EPUB and our newly announced Reader Pocket Edition and Reader Touch Edition will too. If you have a PRS 500, we won't leave you out in the cold. There will be an update path. If you are interested in learning when it's available, please send an email to feedback@ebookstore.sony.com with "500" in the subject line and we'll drop you a line when the process is up and running.

You'll start to see more and more EPUB content become available in the coming months and that means more for you to read. What's better than that?
She followed her blog post up four days later with this:
Quote:
Thanks for your questions. Right now we are determining the best (and easiest for Reader owners) way to implement the update. We'll keep you updated on the blog as we get closer to the changeover time. In the meantime, feel free to email feedback@ebookstore.sony.com with "500" in the subject line and we'll send you a notification as soon as the solution is available.
We're now into late September, moving into October soon - has anyone heard any news since then?
Or am I being a bit impatient?

I e-mailed them about two weeks ago and got the same answer. At this point, I wouldn't trust Sony if they told me water was wet. As soon as i can afford a new reader, I'm done with them.

I would assume you won't hear the details of the 'upgrade path' until they're ready to launch the epub store.

Because when the store is converted, I wouldn't be able to buy new books from it...I still have a 500.

You don't know this for a fact! Sony has promised some sort of upgrade path, and it may be that they will provide a firmware update for the 500's. Until they unveil what their upgrade path will be, I'd hold off on being upset!

Sony doesn't give a shit, according to what they've confirmed so far, 500 owners are screwed.

On the contrary; they have stated that there will be an "update path". Whether that will be a firmware upgrade or (IMHO, more likely) some kind of trade-in deal remains to be seen, but you are certainly not "screwed".

We all know about the "update path". What do those words even mean? If it were worth anything, they would have done it by now to get 500 users to buy the 300 and 600.

If the update path ends up being something to let 500 owners read epubs, like new firmware, why would it get them to buy a 300 or 600?

They said they'd announce it when they got closer to the store change over. Which by most accounts won't be for months yet.
