Downgrading Kindle PW3 on 5.8.9.2?
Hello, I acquired a Kindle PW3 (G090G1) and was reading these forums about jailbreaking the device. The device was connected to wifi and updated itself to version 5.8.9.2 without any confirmation. Never having used a Kindle before I didn't realize it would do this.
Either way, I'm stuck on version 5.8.9.2 now. Is there a way to downgrade the device? Or is there a jailbreak in development for this version? I believe manually downgrading by copying a lower version binary was patched in 5.8.8? |

At present there is no software solution to this problem. You can JB the device via the serial port with the proper hardware and procedure, but this of course requires opening the unit which would void the warranty of a new device. See the thread about serial JB if you wish to take this approach.
Assuming that you purchased this new from Amazon or a store you should be able to return it for a new unit, although they might ask a reason for the return. Once you have another new unit don't let it connect to the internet until you have taken appropriate measures. Dave |

Would it be possible to downgrade to an older version by resetting the device to factory settings?
From there on it could maybe be possible to downgrade further. |

These devices do not run Android (Android stores a copy of a 'safe' firmware version, e-ink Kindles do not). Using the 'Reset (to factory defaults)' only erases everything you have put on the Kindle - including most of our add-ins. |

So to be 100% clear - there is no way to jailbreak a PW3 running firmware 5.8.9.2, as it can not even be downgraded to an earlier firmware? I tried copying over the relevant .bin but it just got deleted as soon as I ejected.
I am unsure whether the PW3 shipped with 5.8.9.2 - is that likely, or is it more likely that it shipped with lower than that but updated itself when I first connected it to wifi? Apologies if that is a stupid question... |

At this point in time, it likely updated the second you turned on wifi. Now as to the first part, there is currently no jailbreak for that firmware. No idea when or if there will ever be one. Check back periodically to the software jailbreak thread for more details. In the meantime, look around and enjoy the rest of the forums. |

The only exception is the KOA - nobody has found the serial port connections on it. |

1) Since this is a new unit see if you can return it for an exchange and take care to JB the new one before it can upgrade itself 2) If you have the skills and equipment you can still JB via the serial port. See the thread on this if this is an option for you. Dave |

Now if only someone could find where the serial port is hiding on the Oasis we could make that a universal recommendation for cases where software JB is blocked. Given the price tag, however, I suspect it will be a while before enough interested hardware geek users tear theirs down and do a detailed enough inspection to locate it.

I can guarantee it won't be me. The closest I come to an electronic anything is the month I spent learning to repair old video games back in the early 90's. Fun to learn but a paycheck would have been nicer.
