El disparate del libro de papel

"La novela como la conocemos está a punto de cambiar". Edward Ambergris proyectó su mensaje ante el auditorio que se encontraba frente a él, mientras que los miembros de éste se revolvían incómodos en sus elaboradas sillas de caoba dedicándole miradas amarillentas y venenosas. Los rumores esparcidos sobre lo que iba a proponer habían cargado el aire con una ira irrespirable y una hostilidad manifiesta.

Edward prosiguió: "La novela tradicional es sin duda una obra de arte: páginas de acero encuadernadas en un lomo de granito y situadas en los mejores lugares para su disfrute. Sin embargo hay que considerar los inconvenientes..."

"¡Pero si no hay!" exclamó una voz desconocida de entre la audiencia.

Edward sonrió tímidamente. "Una novela sólo se puede mostrar en un sitio. Cualquiera que desee leerla debe viajar allí y pagar un chelín para leer las páginas desplegadas ese día en el tiempo asignado. Una persona corriente debe invertir muchos años y una pequeña fortuna para leer una sola obra.

"¡No hay arte sin sufrimiento!" exclamó la voz. Tras una pequeña pausa, matizó: "Sin el suyo, claro, no el nuestro."

"Damas y caballeros, por favor, abran sus mentes hacia la posibilidad que les planteo" dijo Edward. Sostuvo un tosco bloque rectangular frente a sí mismo mientras la audiencia entera lanzaba un grito ahogado como un solo hombre mientras Edward lo abría para revelar las páginas de dentro. "¿Ven? ¡Páginas! Páginas hechas de papel."

La voz ignota reveló su identidad. Era Marmaduke Cotterbum. "El papel es para envolver regalos y limpiarse el trasero, novatillo. ¿Qué relación puede tener con el arte de un novelista?"

"Con esto," Edward pronunció mientras agitaba su libro de papel, "todo hombre, mujer y niño puede tener su propia copia de una novela. Tendrían que seguir pagando un chelín, pero el libro sería suyo para leerlo donde les apetezca y cuando sientan gusto."

"Esp es ridículo" dijo Cotterbum. "Una novela debe ser leída en el lugar que el autor escoja, para que el clima, el paisaje y otro centenar de detalles contribuyan a apreciar la obra en su totalidad."

"¡Sobre todo si la tierra está tan barata!" exclamó otra voz de entre el público. Cotterbum resopló, aparentemente descontento de recabar ese tipo particular de apoyo desde la bancada.

"¿Pero ustedes no desean que sus obras se lean?" preguntó Edward. "Una prensa de papel puede producir, literalmente, centenares de copias de sus obras cada día." Se dirigió al estrado y entregó el libro a Cotterbum. "Simplemente imaginen que cada persona tuviera una."

Cotterbum rasgó el libro por la mitad y se lo devolvió a Edward. "Sólo un imbécil querría algo tan intangible, estúpido." Sus ojos se estrecharon. "Tú dices que estas imprentas pueden producir mi novela en masa como si fuera una sartén. ¿Pero quién impedirá que me la copien?"

"Ah," dijo Edward, "la copia sólo sería legal si la hacen impresores con licencia oficial, y vigilando cuánto de ese dinero va al autor. Sin embargo, tras una cierta cantidad de tiempo imagino que todos tendrían interés en que la obra estuviera disponible para quien quisiera una copia."

Y se hizo el silencio.

Un anciano con aire marchito fue ayudado a erguirse por sus vecinos de sitio. "Joven," dijo, y sus palabras sonaban a quejidos de hombre agotado por los devenires de su vida. "Yo dependo de los ingresos de unas novelas para poder poner pan en mi mesa. ¿Me dejaría morir de hambre?"

Edward sintió que el cuello de su camisa le apretaba más de lo normal, así que trató de aflojarlo para tomar aire. "Por supuesto que no, señor... ¿puedo preguntar su nombre?"

"Silas Humpwinkle," dijo el anciano con un aire que indicaba que no necesitaba decir nada más.

"Señor Humpwinkle, estoy seguro de que su novela..."

"Oh, no la escribí yo" interrumpió Silas. "Fue mi bisabuelo, pero ahora soy el único beneficiario, y le aseguro que me he acostumbrado al dinero que me reporta... ¡Es lo que me da de comer, caballero!"

"Y también le dio un montón de putas y toneladas de opio" entonó alguien en un audible susurro surgido de varias filas más atrás.

"Mi vida ha sido muy completa" dijo Silas, retorciendo su boca gomosa en una sonrisa lasciva. A continuación proyectó un dedo torcido hacia la posición de Edward. "¿Cómo propone usted que viva sin ese dinero?"

Edward parecía desesperado. "¿No puede escribir su propia novela?"

El anciano resopló trabajosamente y se agarró el pecho. Sólo después de beber un generoso trago de brandy que le ofreció algún alma caritativa pudo decir: "¿Y esa es su respuesta? ¿Me está diciendo que sólo el creador de una cosa debe esperar beneficiarse de ella? Eso es una locura, un sinsentido, un disparate. ¡Ya he oído suficiente!"

Silas se dio la vuelta para abandonar la sala, pero su movimiento fue excesivo y se encontró frente a su silla. Reflexionó sobre las ventajas de darse la vuelta de nuevo, pero prefirió empezar a caminar hacia un lado, pisando y tropezándose con quienes aún estaban sentados. Una vez Silas llegó al comedor el resto del auditorio se levantó para irse, pero en deferencia al anciano le dejaron ser el primero en abandonar la sala, por lo que pasó bastante tiempo hasta que ésta se vació.

Edward lanzó una mirada compungida a su libro, ahora rasgado en dos mitades. "Pero si era una idea muy buena..."

I could translate into German, as my command is not bad, but I'm afraid the quality would be sub-optimal, something that the story doesn't deserve.

BTW, which is the other language you were translated into, dadioflex?
