skins for mobipocket emulator
The MobiPocket Emulator is included with MobiPocket Creator. It allows you to preview how a MOBI file will display on various devices. MobiPocket appears to have stopped active development of the emulator, but it is still a very useful capability which is usually buried in MobiPocket Creator menus. It is actually a stand-alone executable, so add a shortcut to "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Mobipocket Shared\Emulator\MobiEmulator.exe" on your Windows desktop for easy access.
The emulator is customizable using "skins", see Creating custom skins. Researching skins, I came across Kindle Emulator Beta Help which is a very nice attempt at a Kindle emulator. Unfortunately, although this emulator is potentially very capable, MobiPocket is hiding most of the good stuff. So making a complete Kindle emulator is difficult. Another problem with this skin is that the screen is the wrong size (in pixels). So I enclose a couple of basic 600x800 skins for the Emulator. Unzip skin.zip and move the contents of the skin directory to "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Mobipocket Shared\Emulator\skin". This will automatically add two skins to the Devices menu (one under Windows CE and the other under Amazon). The Kindle skin does not try to emulate most if the Kindle's keys (and crops the keyboard), but it does try to represent the screen approximately right. It uses the wrong font, but the font sizes are about right (line spacing is too small). Compare the screenshot of the Kindle emulator with the actual Kindle screenshot to see the difference. The standard small device toolbar is included to allow access to menus etcetera. Similarly, the CE600x800 skin emulates a device like an Astak 5" or 6" device. It once again does not try to handle the keys correctly, so it is a better emulation of a device with a touch screen than a more basic setup. It is relatively easy to setup a basic skin, so other devices can be tested and prototyped. If we could work out what actions are available, a very complete emulation of existing and future devices may be possible. |
