Good Article on How Samsung is seen in its backyard -

Quote:
Samsung’s strategy was to build something similar to another company’s product but to make it better, faster and at lower cost. When it pounced, it flooded the market with a wide range of models that were constantly updated with incremental improvements at a speed its rivals found hard to match — a strategy best illustrated by its smartphone business.
Quote:
In South Korea, where Samsung’s achievements are a source of national pride, many perceived a bias against a foreign competitor in the American jury verdict. Still, the ruling reminded South Koreans of something their country lacked, a shortcoming magnified by comparisons between Samsung and Apple.

Although the name Samsung is synonymous with sophistication among South Koreans, the company has never created a product so innovative that it has defined an era in consumer culture, like the Walkman or the iPhone.

“Copying and clever upgrading are no longer viable,” the daily JoongAng Ilbo, The International Herald Tribune’s publishing partner in South Korea, said in an editorial. “Samsung must reinvent itself as a first-mover, despite the huge risks involved in acting as a pioneer, if it hopes to beat the competition.”

Interesting piece of fiction, but reality looks different. Samsung had a wide range of models, Apple made one phone similar in design to what Samsung and other manufacturers were working on, Samsung continued to have a wide range of models.

I posted this before on another thread:

From an memo from Samsung's head of mobile communications:
Quote:
I have confidence in our products’ H/W, in their exterior design, and in their quality. But when it comes to the ease of use of our UX, I lack such confidence.
Influential figures outside the company come across the iPhone, and they point out that “Samsung is dozing off.”
All this time we've been paying all our attention to Nokia, and concentrated our efforts on things like Folder, Bar, Slide, yet when our UX is compared to the unexpected competitor Apple’s iPhone, the difference is truly that of Heaven and Earth.
It’s a crisis of design
(Bold in the original)

Oh, and from the same discussion:
Quote:
[Our] quality isn’t good, perhaps because the designers are chased along by our schedule as they get so many models done. Don’t you say “laughable” about something that is so lacking in the level of perfection that you’re embarrassed to show someone? It’s better to not make anything at all than to make it in a laughable way. All you do is make things hard for the consumer if you put a product on the market that was made in a laughable and makeshift manner.
[...]
It seems like there’s an unnecessary increasing of the number of products at product planning. The path to improving Quality is to eliminate inefficient models and reduce the number of models overall.
Right now we’re expecting to do around 350 models in the first half of this year. If you ask the companies, the Operators we deal with, whether they like that we launch one model right after the another, [the answer is] absolutely not. Quantity isn’t what’s important, what’s important is putting on the market models with a high level of perfection, one to two Excellent ones.

It's all nice and good, but you're not disproving Sil_liS' point, which I gather was your intention by quoting his/her reply.

Samsung Electronics' Galaxy S3 surpassed the iPhone 4S as the top-selling U.S. smartphone in August, the first time that Apple's flagship phone has relinquished its position atop the smartphone food chain.

That's according to Canaccord Genuity analyst T. Michael Walkley, who checks in with retailers to see how each phone is doing.

The iPhone 4S, which initially launched with AT&T, Verizon Wireless, and Sprint Nextel, and then expanded to a number of other carriers, has held the top spot as the single best-selling phone ever since it launched in October. To have held on to that spot would have been impressive for any device, but has been par for the course for previous iPhones.

That would annoy the hell out of Apple, fueling their continuing desire to destroy the opposition legally, rather than out competing them within the free market.

One would hope the presiding judge actually sees what the remainder of the world is ruling on Apple's claims of patent violation (or stealing ideas).

73% down to 50%? If they didn't have their lawyers fight their dirty battles it would take less than that. With the recent decision I would say perhaps 1 1/2 years. Look at Nokia, things move quickly in this market. Apple has been standing still since the introduction of the iphone 4.
