Recognition by O. H. Bennett is his standalone literary suspense thriller centred around the potential rediscovery of an African-American family's missing-after-an-accident-and-long-thought-dead father who may or may not have ended up as a homeless person whose features haunt said family's mother, who must find him again and prove to herself and others in her community circle whether or not her suspicions as to his identity are true or simply a figment of her imagination, free courtesy of publisher Agate's Bolden imprint.

This has quite a bit of praise in the editorial reviews section from a number of respected news/review outlets, as well as for the author's previous literary novels.

Because I'm actually rather fond of literary suspenses which explore themes of lurking stuff what lies behind the suspense elements, even if I don't really read them all that often, and getting one which other readers who read these kinds of things professionally seemed to enjoy is a nice bonus.

Anyway, hope the neighbours to the south have themselves a pleasant Memorial Day holiday, especially those of you who personally have stuff to memorialize.

This fourth novel by O.H. Bennett represents a departure from his earlier work, characterized by rich depictions of African-American families rendered in quiet but powerfully charged prose. These qualities are present in Recognition, but with the addition of a twisting plot that gives the book a thriller-like intensity.

While driving home from work one rainy evening, Dana passes a homeless panhandler and recognizes the features of her husband, Reynolds, whose body had mysteriously disappeared from the scene of a terrible auto accident a decade earlier. Convinced he must have died, Dana had pushed her husband's sister and mother to declare him dead, severely compromising her relationship with the two women in the process. In the subsequent years, Dana moved on, focusing all her energy into raising the son she was carrying when their car plunged over a guardrail and into a river.

Dana begins spending every spare moment searching for the panhandler and in the process, she's plunged back into memories of the difficulties she and her husband were grappling with leading up to their accident. She connects with a homeless prostitute who gives Dana hope by claiming to know the man Dana is seeking.

Throughout her search, Dana struggles with revealing her suspicions to her friends, her in-laws, and most importantly, her son. She begins to suspect someone is watching her home, and initially believes it must be Reynolds, but when she gradually learns that someone else has taken an interest in her, and her search for husband, the story takes a darker turn.
