Cybook Muse: first impressions

Just got my new Cybook Muse Essential. First impressions: beautiful! Screen is white and text is black and sharp. Page turn buttons feel nice and you can't accidentally turn page when holding reader in one hand (which happened a lot with Odyssey). And Muse is much nicer to hold in one hand than Odyssey. I have to say I just love this reader!

Muse is also lighter (167 grams) than my Odyssey HD (194 grams). That is little strange because Bookeen's specs state that Muse weighs 190 grams?...

Calibre doesn't recognise Muse.

After one night of using Muse I can't help but loving this reader even more. The screen is just amazing. Note that my device is without frontlight (I don't need it) and have set page refresh to one page so there is no shadowing whatsoever. The screen is almost as white as Kindle Paperwhite (which has frontlight always on).

The back panel is a little creaky at the bottom, but that doesn't bother me.

Verdict: definitely my number one reader at the moment. Love, love, love. Glad I bought it.

I'll have to pick mine up tonight.

You should run the device recognition debug tool and post the results in Calibre's device forum. That should help kovidgoyal get support for the Muse set up.

The device is very nice looking and the screen looks good with text. I regret that I can't zoom the maps that come with certain books. And beware: the right button is to go forth, the left button to go back. That surprised me. I guess I have a lot to get accustomed to.

I'd like the Muse to be as slim as my Kindle 4, too...

And if Calibre would recognise it, I could load it with books!

More to come when I have been able to use it for hours.

Edit: after an hour of use, I can't help but notice a shadow at the bottom of the screen. And I can see the home screen icon even when I don't call the menu. And it doesn't zoom maps. But the shadow at the bottom is a real deal breaker. I think this ereader is going back... So disappointing...

I hope, too. It'd be a nice ereader otherwise.

But the muse screen, unlike the ocean, is some good old e-ink. So it won't suffer from that.

So the Muse is on its way back to bookeen. I'll try to organise my thoughts about it:

- pros: splendid design, easy to hold in one hand, good screen except at the bottom. I can't say anything about the software, I come from a Kindle 4 and the softwares are much too different. I probably would have got accustomed to the new software if I had kept it.

-cons: a shadow 5 mm wide at the bottom of the screen, the interface and the buttons not always as responsive as I would have liked. And the pinch-and-zoom didn't work on a map in a fantasy book and I would really like an ereader that makes it possible to zoom on maps!

So now it's back to Kindle since amazon.fr has the Paperwhite on sale for Christmas.

For the zoom, would be interesting to see how the ePub is codded.

Initial impressions: the Muse is a very nice-looking, small device. It feels like a 5" reader in my hand, although it isn't, and the buttons finally have a good feel that I don't think I'll press accidentally.

I don't see the shadow that's been reported elsewhere, although there is a sort of mild... overlay?... I'm not sure what to call it... due to the lack of inset bezel.

Text is sharp, and it only took me a few minutes to get things set up the way I wanted them, although I probably won't move over my whole library until Calibre supports the Muse (hopefully this Friday). The smallest margin setting is still slightly wider than I'd prefer (there are three options), but it's improved over the Odyssey. The interface is easy to use, and:

Here's a feature I've yet to see anywhere else: the thumbnails have grasped the notion that books don't all get created with thumbnails in the same aspect ratio, and just display as they are instead of stretching to fit a frame.

Overall, my initial impression of the Muse is very favorable.

(The case is pretty blah, though, and it's closer to orange than red.)

The epub I tried was one already on the reader, a French translation of a Brentwood Weeks novel. I don't know much about Ebooks formatting so I wouldn't know where to look. I'm really sorry the muse didn't work for me, it's a really beautiful and pleasing to hold device.

Looked at it (it's on the ocean as well)
and indead :
<body>
<div style="text-align:center; height:60%; margin-top:10%"><img alt="" height="100%" src="../Images/carte.jpg" /></div>
</body>

So, height of the image is fixed. (weird choice IMHO).

I just watched the GoodEReader video review of the Muse. This is a good review in that it highlights a lot of issues with the firmware. The interface is just clunky and according to the video. Iit does miss some touchscreen presses. Using the touchscreen to change the page causes a flash every time. You have to use the page turn button to avoid the flash all the time. The dictionary lookup is a mess. Annotations are a mess. Panning/zooming is a mess. The settings are very similar to that of a Kindle. I don't know if it's because of the way the settings are, but in the video, the page number display is rather large.

GoodEReader recommends far too much (Not critical enough) and even they could not recommend the Muse.
