[Device Plugin] Kobo Touch Extended Driver - Page 120

Just curious, does this plugin modify the color of illustrations and such that are color (pics in the books)? I am not sure if it's just placebo but I did notice a difference when it's a kepub versus a epub with the driver

This plugin does not modify images, but there are calibre conversion settings which can affect images. KePub also uses a different rendering engine than ePub, which depending on the image may make it look slightly different.

That looks like an error in the cover.xhtml code. Open the book in the editor and run the error check. That should show what is wrong and you can fix it.

Install the epubckeck plugin and then run that. It catches more errors than the built-in error checker.

That's overkill. The built-in error checker will find the problem. And it will find any error that is likely to cause a problem on a Kobo ereader.

Be sure that you have java installed in your machine or you'll get a "file not found" error (and no, not everybody has java installed). And I agree with davidfor that it is not usually necessary.

You can also do an epub-to-epub conversion, that also fixes the errors.

Thanks, the inbuilt check fixed the issues automatically and now it worked uploading, I encountered another book with error and that also fixed it. I will check out this plugin as well.

Just curious, is there any way to make it send epub without disabling kobo metadata for some specific files? For example send specific format > epub still seems to send it as kepub or is there no way?

Not like that, this plugin intercepts the ePub and converts it. That's the whole point of it. There's an option in the plugin settings to disable extended features, but you have to go change it manually each time you want to flip between ePub and KePub.

Is there any particular reason you want ePub and not KePub for only some books?

@elaxon: The alternative is to convert the epub to kepub and send that using the KoboTouch driver. This is my practice as I generally prefer the epub reader. But, occasionally there are books that are better read as kepub. That's usually because of images and footnotes, but a few epub3 books have arrived recently that worked better as kepubs.

An alternative is to swap between the drivers. My Kobo Utilities plugin has an option to do this. It still needs a restart of calibre, but it is much quicker than hunting through the preferences.

One of the reasons is that I have noticed slight differences in the books between kepub and epub and have come to prefer epub. But in some cases I do like having kepub as it keeps the chapter remaining and such working.

If using the convert to kepub option will it have same effect as enable kobo metadata checkbox? Yes I am using kobo utilities and saw that option, very neat.

I'm not sure what you are referring to. I don't remember anything in the driver options that I would call a "Kobo metadata" option. And I can't check at the moment.

But, the metadata isn't populated by the driver. Calibre does this as part of the send process. You will need to install the Kepub Metadata Writer plugin for this to work.

The only other thing I can think of is that if you use metadata plugboards, you need to make sure there is a kepub version as well as the epub version.

That's not metadata, that's modifications to the contents of the book itself. Metadata is set exactly the same for both epub and KePub.
