Get 2GB Added to Your Google Drive Account Free

Google's doing a promo for Safer Internet Day where if you complete a security checkup on your Google account they'll add 2GB storage to your Google Drive permanently. Here's the info from their blog post:

This Safer Internet Day, we’re reminded how important online safety is and hope you’ll use this as an opportunity to take 2 minutes to complete a simple Security Checkup. While everything stored in Drive is always encrypted in transit and at rest in Google’s custom-built data centers, this checkup ensures you’re making the most of the 24/7 protection you already get from Google. As our way of saying thanks for completing the checkup by 17 February 2015, we’ll give you a permanent 2 gigabyte bump in your Google Drive storage plan.

It takes just a couple of minutes and, unlike other checkups, it won’t leave you feeling guilty about not flossing. Here’s what it does:

• Ensures your account recovery information is current
  If we detect suspicious activity in your account, we use your recovery info to get in touch and make sure no one but you gains access.
• Lets you review recent sign-in activity
  Reviewing this lets you validate the sign-ins are coming from you and not someone who shouldn't be using your credentials.
• Confirms the apps and devices that access some account information
  This step lets you monitor this list and remove apps and devices that don't need access to your account any more.

After you’ve gone through the checkup successfully, you’ll see three green checkboxes (see below) that confirm you’re eligible for the free storage and, more importantly, that you’ve taken steps to enhance your online safety. We’ll be granting the storage automatically to everyone around 28 February 2015 and we’ll send you an email when your adjustment is complete.

Ideally, you’ll revisit this checkup every so often or anytime your account changes, like when you get a new phone or replace an old laptop. While this is just one way to help you stay safe online, you can find even more tools and tips in the Google Safety Center.

UPDATE: Google Apps for Work and Google Apps for Education users are not eligible for the bonus storage but should still consider taking the Security Checkup.

Note: The 2GB will be added around February 28th, so it won't show up immediately.

I find it amazing that they used shortened URLs in a post promoting security. I know they control goo.gl, but that's just begging for people to get scammed by a shortened link. I decrypted them and used the direct links in this post.

That sucks for those who haven't. I did it on mine a while back for the extra security, but I can understand those not wanting to.

You must also have apps connected to your Google account, which I don't, so I only pass the first two checks (no extra storage for me ).

Can't you just verify that none should be connected?

Well, I have Google Chrome signed in, so I can't really check...

I went through the security check and it only checked the first two items (two green check marks and "continue to account settings"). It's not that important because if I need more space, I just have to create another ... well you know

I gave them my phone number when I went to two-factor authentication, which in my mind, is a worthwhile trade-off.

Finally received my upgrade today... worth waiting for, I guess!

Not only did you improve your account security, you have also received a 2GB bump in Google Drive storage. This permanent upgrade has already been processed and is reflected on your storage settings page, where you can review your usage and purchase more storage space should you need it.

Please replace the overly large now delete graphic image with one that's of a correct size so we can see what you are trying to show us.

Why? The deal is over with, and has been for a couple of weeks. It also wasn't terribly important, just showing a graphic of what you see once the security check is done. Since Google opted to make the damn source image huge, and obviously my resizing attempt with Imgur didn't work, I don't feel it's worth the effort to fix now.

You did notice it was only good through 2/17 right? People responding now are just reporting they got their extra storage added, something that was always scheduled to happen after 2/28. It's too late to get the extra storage if you didn't do the security check earlier.

Also, it would help to not be a jerk about it. Simply saying "Please replace the image." would have gotten me to bother with it. The way you phrased it just felt like an attack. Yeah, I'm already aware it was too large, even though I tried making it smaller when I posted. Thanks for pointing it out again, I sure didn't notice that moderator's notice earlier.

I also got my storage overnight, seems they're running behind. Glad to finally get it though!

Yep, I also received my free 2GB on the 10th, and yet the promo wasn't showing for Aus people, though I decided to complete the check anyway.
