Short Story Anthologies

I'm way more partial to short stories than novels (sometimes the shorter the better! ) as some of you may know.

I'm always on the lookout for new short story anthologies and collections (anthologies are generally better IMO). I've recently run across a couple of anthologies edited by Ben Marcus that are outstanding. He seems to have located a bunch of great stories that I have not previously read (along with a few that I have but are absolutely worth rereading).

Both highly recommended:

New American Short Stories

The Anchor Book of New American Short Stories

Enjoy!

What is the difference between an anthology and a collection; I did a quick google and didn't see any? Thanks.

An anthology is typically multiple authors chosen by an editor. A collection is a single author.

Jeff and Ann Vandermeer have a SF anthology coming out in July. Entertainment Weekly has an article about it.

http://www.ew.com/article/2016/03/30...ann-vandermeer

At over 700,000 words, $13 isn't such a bad deal.

Thanks for the heads up.

I bought their Time-traveller's almanac and was very impressed with the amount of work and 'extras' in that anthology so I shall look out for this.

NB Originally published in one volume, now also available split into four sections - don't get caught out buying the same stories twice like I did.

Ted Chiang's Stories of Your Life and Others
His writing is very thoughtful, often bordering on profound. He only publishes one or two stories a year, but they are always insightful. Don't be put off by the sci-fi label he is often given. His stories rise above simple categorization. I consider Stories of your life to be some of his best work.

Two of my favorites:

Cakewalk - Lee Smith - When I was in Chapel Hill full time, I'd run into Lee walking her dogs occasionally. I read her stories in my Southern Literature class at UNC and they have always stayed with me.

The Complete Stories - Flannery O'Connor - I think it speaks for itself...
