I correct my comment about Wi-Fi on PocketBook devices. Since the recent v2022.06-06 there is no problem to enable or disable it from KOReader. The difference is that it has to be previously enabled and active before opening KOReader. From then on, as long as you don't turn off the e-reader or close the book, you can control and perform any operation that requires Wi-Fi from KOReader without any problem. I tested it for several hours and the connection did not fail at any time and with any device.

I use it in the new pw5 and already has the new feature page-flip turn animation, and I find it that it works a bit faster than the standard UI. amazing.

I recommend the Kindle Paperwhite 5. Pretty sure all the in-store models are still on old firmware so you can get one now at Target or Best Buy and jailbreak it and put KOReader on it. The battery life I’m getting out of KOReader on the PW5 is nothing short of phenomenal. 1% drain per hour of actual reading (maybe like 1.1% max), so by Amazon’s phrasing, it’s more like 6 months of battery with 30mins of reading a day instead of the 2.5 months they’re advertising. (Obviously, the overhead of waking/sleeping won’t let you get all the way to 6 months, but still.)

I had the Libra 2 before but returned it because the PW battery knocked my socks off. And like @muggleMode says, the page turn animations eliminate almost all screen flashes and look great in KOReader too.

The truth is that the Paperwhite 5's battery life is excellent. I haven't installed KOReader because I'm one of the rare ones who likes the original software and because I'm over-saturated with KOReader (I have it installed on numerous devices), but for those who are KOReader fans or only have one or two devices it could be a very interesting option.

Is it possible to update the Kindle to future firmware versions and send books by activating WiFi without losing the jailbreak?

That's a question better asked in the Kindle Dev forum.

(The answer to which is: Maybe, and so far. Requires further trickery if you want to actually control when to update to avoid surprises, though).

I'm thinking of replacing my Boyue Ares with an 8 inch Kobo to run KOReader on. That would probably mean a Forma or Sage, and the Forma is a lot lighter. Why would Sage be your 8 inch choice?

As far as I understood, Sage has new platform and SoC, meaning some of quirk aren't discovered and countered yet Forma has more traditional platform with most of the things covered. Sage would be your choice, I think, just for the purpose of note taking.

I might be (slightly) wrong though, so let's wait our gurus

the Carta 1200 screen on the Sage is beautiful, and it doesn't have the power button problem the Forma did. Also, Formas will get harder and harder to find as time passes

Hmm. Possibly the greatest mathematician of all time and a duck seem to have differing opinions on Sage vs Forma.

An 8 inch ereader is my sweet spot, and given the size, durability, ergonomics, the fact that I just want to read with it, and it's overall Kobo-ness, the Forma might be my ideal KOReader platform. The possible scarcity of the Forma means I might want to get one when I find one.

One difference between the duck and the mathematician is that the duck owns and uses a Sage, and is not making a guess, but speaking from personal experience of 9 months using it for several hours a day.

If you check these forums, you'll find many comparisons between the 2 devices, and many references to the display issues the Forma had which are not in the Sage. The only area in which the Forma outperforms the Sage is battery life.

I was going to get a Sage until the battery turned out not to be all that good.

I would *NOT* get a Forma over a Sage, whatever the reasoning might be.

(I would maybe make an exception for people who really need a very light and/or "can be dropped without fear" device, in which case the Forma wins ).

Hm.
I did read over the Forma vs Sage discussions, here and elsewhere, and it didn't seem very clear cut (which is why I asked about it here). After reading about it here and on reddit, the impression that I had was that if you don't want to take notes with it, you might as well get the lighter one. And the Forma does seem significantly lighter.
But that doesn't seem to be an issue here.

But ...
the duck, the guru (emphatically, to my surprise) and even the mathematician (barring unknown issues, which the duck assures me aren't really there) seem to agree that the Sage is the way to go.

Otherwise, yeah, a Kobo. Probably a Sage, until we have more info about the whole Libra 2 situation (i.e., whether the latest hw rev is intentional and actually fixes the main stability issues).
How sure are you that it will ship with breakable FW? That's a hell of a gamble...

IME Koreader works great on a Kindle. Almost tempting...
