"Few Christmas stories hold as much fascination as the story, A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens.

Inspired by the Dickens tale, A Christmas Carol, three young women decide to hold a séance to raise the spirits of Christmas Past, Present and Future. They don't expect a result, but what they call out of the aethyr gives them a creepy holiday they will never forget, if they live to tell the tale!"
I'm not sure I want to read a horror take on A Christmas Carol. But then I did pick up the author's other book, Letters to the Damned and it does sound very promising.

Have you read A Christmas Tale? Would you recommend it?

Through December 4th in Canada, the US, and UK, Kobo are promoting “Chilly Thrillers” under £2.99/$4.99, with selected titles in dedicated Horror categories and several strays filed in others. Genre authors I recognized include Graham Masterson and Christopher Golden. Many of these are probably publisher promos available in the other stores as well.

John Everson's Siren is $0.99 at Amazon. I haven't read it yet, but I do have the old leisure paperback (and now the ebook).

Night after night, Evan walked along the desolate beach, grieving over the loss of his son, drowned in an accident more than a year before. Then one night he was drawn to the luminous sound of a beautiful, naked woman singing near the shore in the moonlight. He watched mesmerized as the mysterious woman disappeared into the sea. Driven by desire and temptation, Evan returned to the spot every night until he found her again.

Now he has begun a bizarre, otherworldly affair. A deadly affair. For Evan will soon realize that his seductive lover is a being far more evil...and more terrifying...than he ever imagined. He will learn the danger of falling into the clutches of the... SIREN.

Christopher Rice's The Vines is $1.99 at Amazon. I've never read any Christopher Rice, but the book sounds promising:

The dark history of Spring House, a beautifully restored plantation mansion on the outskirts of New Orleans, has long been forgotten. But something sinister lurks beneath the soil of the old estate.

After heiress and current owner Caitlin Chaisson is witness to her husband’s stunning betrayal at her birthday party, she tries to take her own life in the mansion’s cherished gazebo. Instead, the blood she spills awakens dark forces in the ground below. Chaos ensues and by morning her husband has vanished without a trace and his mistress has gone mad.

Nova, daughter to Spring House’s groundskeeper, has always suspected that something malevolent haunts the old place, and in the aftermath of the birthday party she enlists Caitlin’s estranged best friend, Blake, to help her get to the bottom of it. The pair soon realizes that the vengeance enacted by this sinister and otherworldly force comes at a terrible price.

Yes I have and yes I would, assuming you like Horror. I found it a very creative way to do a take off of the ghosts of Christmas past, present and future for each of the primary characters, who were modern women and had nothing in common with Scrooge, though one was shallow at the beginning.

I've read that and found it fairly good. My only complaint is that it's written in present tense. With his mother, he should know better!

I haven't read Bad Chili yet, but Joe Lansdale's always worth a read. (Bad Chili is one of the Hap and Leonard books. Not horror stories. More redneck noir crime thrillers.)

Free Douglas Clegg!

You can pick up Nightmare House, the first story of his Harrow haunted house novels. (Though each book is about the haunted Harrow House, the first few at least can be read individually. Nightmare House is the first Harrow House story, though it is the third he wrote.) Below swiped from Amazon:

The Harrow series of novels is based on the author's research of a few haunted houses, embellished with the idea of one house in the world which hosts infinite hauntings because of its occult origins. Each novel in the Harrow series is a different type of haunted house or hauntings of a psychic nature, all set in or around the dark mansion called Harrow. With more books to come.

Here they are in (internal chronological) order:

The Full-Length Novels:
  1. Nightmare House, Book 1 (Set in the 1920s, quiet haunting mystery.)
  2. Mischief, Book 2 (Harrow becomes a boys' school for awhile.)
  3. The Infinite, Book 3 (Psychic investigators converge on Harrow.)
  4. The Abandoned, Book 4 (Harrow's toxic haunting leaks into the local town, all-out horror.)
Prequel Novellas (not set at Harrow, but about its originators):
  1. The Necromancer (The early life of Justin Gravesend.)
  2. Isis (The early life of the later psychic of Harrow.)

There's a Richard Matheson omnibus up for sale at Amazon. Two books I've heard of, two I haven't.

The reviews on the Amazon page are actually for the Matheson collection Nightmare at 20,000 Feet, FYI.

Richard Matheson Suspense Novels: The Shrinking Man, Camp Pleasant, Hunger and Thirst, 7 Steps to Midnight - $3.99

The Shrinking Man: While on vacation, Scott Carey is exposed to a cloud of radioactive gas—and begins to shrink at a fraction of an inch per day. As he loses his stature, his relationships with his spouse, family, and friends are also threatened—as is his life. The inspiration for several movies, this novel raises interesting questions about the meaning of masculinity in 1950’s American suburbia.

Camp Pleasant: As a first-time camp counselor at a boy’s summer camp, Matt Harper is the witness to a murder. Told with jarring simplicity, this novel tells the story of casual brutality in an environment that should be representative of idyllic childhood innocence.

Hunger and Thirst: In renowned science fiction and horror writer Richard Matheson’s first novel, the protagonist lies paralyzed in a hospital bed after catching a bullet in a robbery gone wrong. In this touching and compelling novel, he contemplates his life thus far—and his hopes for the future.

7 Steps to Midnight: At the end of an ordinary workday, mathematician Chris Barton finds his car missing from the employee parking lot and a stranger living in his house, claiming to be him. Thrust into a surreal world of violence and mystery, Chris must go on the run, stay alive, and follow a series of cryptic clues to regain his life.

Today's Big Deal at Amazon UK is a whole pile of novels by Peter James for 99p each.

Looks like most of them have a supernatural theme.
