Borders ebook store now live (US only)

Borders ebook store is now open for business. According to their tweet they've got "over a million" ebooks available :

Quote:
Now open: our new eBook Store! Choose from over a million eBooks. Your books. Your device. Your choice http://ht.ly/285Ij
Go take a look and let us know what you think of it.

edit : "eBook downloads are available only in the US."

Interesting. I don't know why but I thought they were partnered with Kobo/Indigo?

they do sell the Kobo, but apparently they're in favour of the open ecosystem model, to their credit. unfortunately this only applies to the US.

And they feature three eReaders on the front page-Kobo, Sony and Aluratek!

Hm, but a quick read-through of their "getting started" page seems to indicate that they are going by the billing address on the credit card you use for making purchases... This might be do-able.

But first we have to see how their pricing looks.

Can a member from the US verify if they get the above message while viewing a potential ebook purchase?

If not, they are georestricting by IP address.

They are partnered with Kobo, yes. This is the Kobo ebookstore with the Borders logo slapped on top.

Quick check against the iBooks store for the top 10 bestsellers on Borders list:
1 book is cheaper on Borders (Patterson's The 9th Judgement)
3 books are the same price on Borders
6 out of the 10 aren't even available on iBooks.

I wonder why Kobo has some books that Borders doesn't? For example, Kraken by China Mieville.

Just downloaded the iPad app and the first three books that I browsed ( 1984 by George Orwell, Audacity of Hope and Going Rogue by Palin) were cheaper on the borders store than on iBooks, amazon or B&N.

EDIT: Audacity of Hope and 1984 are not available on iBooks.

How many formats come with a purchase?

When you buy the ebook, do you get access to all of the formats (i.e., download both the "Mobile" version to iPhone and the epub version to Sony Reader), a la Fictionwise's "Multiformat," or do you just get one?
