Koreader power hungry on Sage
So I decided to try out KOreader again, used nicklemenu, and the nightly build from 11 Nov (looks like it was pushed on 12 Nov).
https://build.koreader.rocks/downloa...c2_2021-11-11/ I'm sorry if this is fixed now, as there is a new nightly build, or if it's a known issue still being tweaked. But boy howdy is koreader a battery drainer on the Kobo Sage. We're talking 10%+ in under 30mins of reading. I generally like koreader (in the short time I used it, aside from an issue opening large ebooks, it's nice and I can squeeze the margins just ever so slightly smaller than I can on the built in reader. But that power drain is beyond what I can accept. I haven't tweaked anything, so if there's something I might have missed or not done that would decrease the drain let me know. Wifi was off, light was around 5, natural light was off. |

Known "issue", see the Sage threads in the Kobo forum for more details.

In particular, this thread: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=342811
As I mentioned here, I was kinda expecting this, so I spent a few hours working on autostandby before the release, but it's highly finicky, and requires lots of boring and annoying testing, which means I need blocks of free time to work on it, and I won't have any of those until... spring, maybe? I might try to shoe-horn it earlier if it actively bothers me before that, but it hasn't so far (then again, that would actually imply me actually also having time to read in the first place, sigh). |

Alas, but good to know I didn't bungle things up. Hopefully you get some time soon, until then I suppose for now it's back to the built in reader.

Which will only exhibit slightly less terrible battery life, though

If you can pin down a general trend, I wouldn't mind more data on that front (so far, my own experience roughly matches that thread).

For KOReader it’s more like 10%+/30 minutes with the same settings. I did turn off the progress bar and enabled reclaim space from bottom margin not sure if that has any major impact on the battery but I tend to doubt it. Also can’t be sure Bluetooth was off but I never turned it on so I presume it was off. I’m happy to do some testing though I dunno if I’d have the technical knowledge to get you logs etc if they are what’s needed. I’ve not got tons of time to read but from what it sounds like I’ve got more than you do. And while I can’t accept the current drain to make KOReader my go to reader I can do some reading on the weekends when I’ll have easy access to an outlet. |

The drain is basically 99.9% unrelated to anything KOReader might do (because that's essentially nothing in the grand scheme of things ;p), so usage patterns ought to be fairly irrelevant (unless you spend your time scrolling in a PDF ;p).
The only thing that ought to matter are the frontlight & Wi-Fi. BT being off is not actually a thing that you can do while WiFi is on right now, given the hardware/kernel constraints, but (hopefully), the WiFi+BT chip might actually be the thing with the sanest power management in there (and, again, Nickel's in the same boat there) ;p. |
