Forma - Swipe to unlock ARRRRRRGHHHH

Got my Kobo Forma today and updated the firmware. With the factory firmware waking the reader from Sleep mode works just like you would expect, press the button and it wakes up. With new new firmware 4.11.11911 when you wake from sleep instead of waking up it shows a "Swipe to unlock" dialog at the bottom of the page. I don't know why anyone would think that this was a desirable feature and I can't find any way to turn it off.

Does anyone know of a way to get normal waking functionality back?

I believe rogerinnyc gave the most compelling reason so far:

If you're using the sleep cover, the orientation is usually correct at the start and there is no need to swipe.
Makes some sense.

But I agree, "Swipe to Unlock" is pretty bad. I wrote about my experience with this "Swipe to Unlock" in another post.

On the initial firmware, I could just push the power button to unlock and jump right into the book/homescreen.

On the new firmware, the swipe is impossible to use in the dark, and I more than likely reset the entire device instead.

For the "correct rotation", I think a better solution would be like in Android, allow you to enable/disable any of the degrees individually (0° + 90° + 180° + 270°). Personally, I would set it to 0° (or 180°) and forget about it!

Hope for the next firmware to bring back the original unlock.

Or like MGlitch said, "Get a sleep cover". (Having to buy expensive extra hardware because of a crippling software decision... ugh...)

I'm not sure I see the sense in that. If it can come out of sleep correctly using the sleep cover, why shouldn't it come out of sleep correctly using the power button (this is from the users point of view.)

Maybe, as a compromise, they could give the option to choose one or the other.

Is it perhaps an attempt to mitigate the risk of the divice being turned on by accident? Assuming the swipe times out quickly and the device goes back to sleep if no swipe is detected it could prevent battery from draining. Even if that is why, it needs to be a setting you can turn off.

I have no idea what benefit it's supposed to give. There is no swipe to unlock "feature" on a ClaraHD with the same fw (4.11.11911), even if you use the button to switch in/out of sleep mode. So the benefit would appear to be aimed only at the Forma.

If you don't swipe to unlock the Forma goes to sleep after 30 seconds. With the original firmware I noticed a bug where the Forma would come out of sleep on it's own (sitting on a wooden table with no magnets around). I put it back to sleep and a minute later I noticed it was on again. I disabled the sleep cover setting (which is on by default) and it didn't happen again. I suspect that Kobo implemented this as a temporary work around so the battery wouldn't drain. I wish they would have made it an option to disable it though and I hope it's fixed in the next firmware.
