Romance/Erotica publisher Ellora's Cave offers their Naughty Nooners short stories free in ePub format at Barnes & Noble and Sony. This search at B&N will bring them all up, you'll have to search for them individually by name at Sony using the list at the publisher's site (no ePubs direct from them, for some reason).

Samhain Publishing (who, incidentally, have the best content warnings ever) also offers a few free e-books, usually as a time-limited promo. You can find them in the B&N store via this search here; they don't seem to offer via Sony.

Both Ellora's Cave and Samhain's freebie offerings seem to be DRM-free via B&N, or at least have been on the past dozen or so I've downloaded and checked out of curiosity over the past couple of months to see if they'd keep it up, in case you were worried about compatibility issues with your chosen reader.

And there's the free reads section at AllRomance eBooks. While not strictly all-erotic, they have a "heat level" rating which should help you weed out the tamer stuff and most of the offerings are available in multiple formats.

For GLBT tales, specialty bookstore Rainbow eBooks has been doing promotions where they offer two selected stories free over the weekend. Not always ePub or erotic, but often multiformat and some form of romance, so you might luck out.

Finally, while it's not quite what you were looking for, there's some free (and DRM-free!) Harlequin and Mills & Boon romances with varying levels of explicitness that you might perhaps be interested in trying at their respective sites: Try Harlequin, Harlequin Celebrates 60 Years, Everyone's Reading.

Not sure if it's exactly what you're looking for but there is some old stuff at http://neatopotato.net/xnovel/browse_series They seem to be text files (some with a jpeg of the original cover) but with a program like sigil you could easily make your own epubs from that. I'm assuming they either aren't under copyright or that the publishers/authors let the copyrights lapse since they are free to download by all appearances.

How right you are on both counts.

Mind you, it is the sort of erotica that interests men mostly ...

Written in 1749 while Cleland was in debtor's prison in London, it is considered the first "erotic" novel and its publication caused a furor. Immediately upon its release, the Church of England asked the British Secretary of State to "stop the progress of this vile Book, which is an open insult upon Religion and good manners." As a result, Cleland was arrested and charged with "corrupting the King's subjects."

Nonetheless, copies of the book were sold "underground," and the book eventually made its way to the United States where, in 1821, it was banned for obscenity.

In 1963, G. B. Putnam published the book under the title John Cleland's Memoirs of a Woman of Pleasure which also was immediately banned for obscenity. The publisher challenged the ban in court.

In a landmark decision in 1966, the United States Supreme Court ruled in Memoirs v. Massachusetts that the banned novel did not meet the Roth standard for obscenity.

Well.... have you ever heard of the Alt Sex Stories Text Repository (www.asstr.org)?

Back in the day before the web became graphical, Newsgroups were the way people shared things and there was a very dynamic newsgroup where people wrote sex stories. ASSTR is a effort to preserve these and current works by people. It's all free (although you should donate to the cause.)

There are many, many hot and well written stories. There was even a group dedicated to reviewing the stories called "Celeste" and many authors competed to get high ratings.

It's mostly text based but you can read the stores on a web page or they have FTP access to everything.

I have to warn you - it's not just erotic but nearly every perversion you can think of is covered.

There is also the Erotic Reader website. The stories are free, but the site constantly nags you to sign up for a Deluxe account so you can create bookshelf and do advanced searches:
