Advice on filing author's name please
I'm working on a book by Elizabeth von Arnim for the MR library, and have a rather pedantic question about how her name should be filed.
There is one ebook in the library by an English speaker, filed as Arnim, Elizabeth von. There are three ebooks in the library by German speakers, filed as von Arnim, Elizabeth. And the University of Melbourne ebook library also files her this way. Do MobileRead moderators have a recommendation? |

I don't know if this is helpful or not, but Encyclopedia Britannica and the Oxford Encyclopedia list names with "von" thusly:
LastName, FirstName von (note no comma between first name and von) Maybe German grammar rules are different on this point... |

I think filing as
[surname], [first name] von is more useful. And if it's good enough for the Encyclopedia Britannica, I suspect it's good enough for us. I suppose we do need to make them all the same. |

Thanks to you both. I'll follow the authorities you quoted.
Though I suppose it would be wise to check von last name, first name if one was searching for a book. Last edited by AlexBell; 04-20-2017 at 03:11 AM. |
