Temporary files and Owncloud
Ok, perhaps a dumb question but....
I am storing my Calibre Library on a Owncloud server and syncing it across multiple machines. One of the problems I am noticing is that calibre seems to make some temporary files it deletes pretty quickly when certain tasks are done in the app. This confuses the heck out of Owncould and causes it throw errors when it tries to sync a file that's no longer there. So, I was wondering if someone could provide me a list of calibre temporary files i can exclude from the sync. |

I think calibre may create some temporary folder/files within the library folder when books get moved & deleted - AFAIK you cant redirect where those folders and files are created. And IIRC the names of the folders and/or files are random strings 6 characters long that are generated as needed - eg hd5fny The bottom line is that calibre as it stands today, is not designed to work on servers or network storage appliances. Clouds are a form of network shares.
As of this time, those are STILL unreliable (in Calibre) and unsupported (and fraught with perils as many don't happen in real time) Best advice around is to PAUSE sync while using Calibre AFAIK Calibre uses the %TEMP% folder for those random filenames |

AFAIK whatever calibre puts into %CALIBRE_TEMP_DIR% get permanently deleted - not sent to the rubbish bin. Owncloud is FOSS software that's most often installed on Linux or Windows 2008 servers by people/enterprises who want cloud like services (a'la Dropbox and SkyDrive) on private networks. BR PS : IIRC the reason those temporary folders are created in the library location came about from calibre having deal with a dozen or more different file systems across several different operating systems and several versions of each. Ordinarily they wouldn't be necessary, but there was a 'corner case' on one combination, I think fixing that created another corner case elsewhere. So Kovid had to devise a 'work on all combinations' solution, and thus came about the very short lived temporary folders in the library parent folders. br Last edited by BetterRed; 05-08-2014 at 07:09 PM.
