Only $9.99. Book about the Modern History of Drink Spiking and Predatory Drugging.
Palgrave's "Deal of the Day" has enough of a broad-based appeal that I think that it's worthwhile to post it.
It's Drink Spiking and Predatory Drugging:A Modern History. Although I'm sure that this is not its main focus, I hope that it will keep someone reading this from ever experiencing it. This book, published in 2016, is written by Pamela Donovan. Amazon's version, at least, of the book is 294 pages long. Amazon's ebook is available only in mobi; however, this Palgrave edition is available in PDF and/or ePub, and they are DRM Free. Here's the description, from a Palgrave webpage about the book: This book analyses common perceptions about drink-spiking, a pervasive fear for many and sometimes a troubling reality. Ideas about spiked drinks have shaped the way we think about drugs, alcohol, criminal law, risk, nightspots, and socializing for over one hundred and fifty years, since the rise of modern anaesthesia and synthetic 'pharma-ubiquity'. The book offers a wide-ranging look at the constantly shifting cultural and gender politics of 'psycho-chemical treachery'. It provides rich case histories, assesses evolving scientific knowledge, and analyses the influence of social forces as disparate as Temperance and the acid enthusiasts of the 1960s. Drawing on interdisciplinary research, the book will be of great interest to upper-level students and scholars of criminal law, forensic science, public health, and social movements. Amazon has a price of $99.00 for the Kindle version of this book; Palgrave says that the list price is $84.99. Whichever it is, the current price at Palgrave of $9.99 is a fantastic deal. https://www.palgrave.com/us/book/978...=9781137575173. |

Thought I'd pass on a couple of Kindle links with a lot of interesting freebies for those who like serious books and have the time and patience to sort through these.
1) university press sort low-high https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=sr_pg_1...qid=1526752409 2) Routledge sort low-high https://www.amazon.com/gp/search/ref...qid=1526749363 Note: at some point these lists stop being free so keep that in mind. I think its at about 12 pages on the up list and maybe 20 pages on the Routledge. Last edited by keithdt; 05-19-2018 at 02:33 PM. |

Palgrave's Drastically-Marked-Down Deal, at the Moment.
Palgrave's periodic deal. In effect right now:
Understanding Life in School: From Academic Classroom to Outdoor Education, John Quay. The blurb: Attending school is an experience that most people share but this leads us to accept rather than question the experience. Using the philosophies of Heidegger and Dewey, John Quay explores life in schools and juxtaposes the environment of a school camp with that of an academic classroom. List price: $89.00; the Amazon Kindle mobi is $85.50; current price at Palgrave; $9.99. Right now, you play 11% of the list price! No ratings at Amazon or GoodReads (not unusual for an academic book with an esoteric subject). https://www.palgrave.com/us/book/9781137391223? |

I'm winding down my posts about Palgrave's daily (sort of) deals. I feel like people will have decided by now whether or not the deals interest them and, if so, can make a point to check for themselves. I can move on and use the time to find some other great deals to highlight for you.
Of course, I reserve the right to post one every now and then that I consider an especially good book and/or great value. Here's one piece of information that you might be interested in knowing. I bought one of the sale books ($9.99) for the first time, three or four days ago. After I purchased the book, I got this advertisement, I suppose that you would call it: Congratulations! You have received a discount of $/£5 on any eBook! Savings will be visible in the shopping cart through December 31, 2018.* Your £5 Gift Card for The Palgrave Shop Discover our vast selection of titles across all fields of scholarship, research and professional learning in The Palgrave Shop and save £5 on your next eBook purchase through the end of the year. I don't understand the meaning of $/£5. Another place has simply £5. I going to assume that £5 is correct. £5, at the current exchange rate, is about $6.75. A common price point for a Palgrave sale book is $9.99. Therefore, wouldn't one at that price, using the gift card, amount to only about $3.75 ($10 - $6.75)? If so, what a deal! However, if the meaning of $/£5 for Americans is $5, that would still make a deal only about $5.00 ($10 - $5). Again, that's on a deal of $9.99, as we commonly see. The December 31, 2018 ending date is a nice plus, too. Last edited by GtrsRGr8; 05-23-2018 at 12:42 AM. |

Mountain Men not (no longer?) available in the U.S., but thanks for the Norse mythology book. It seems like there has been an increased interest in Norse mythology in the last several years. I am at a loss to explain it, though. Maybe people are just now beginning to realize how good it is. Or maybe people just have gotten tired of the same 'ole Greek and other mythology. Or maybe it's something else . . . . Last edited by GtrsRGr8; 05-23-2018 at 06:59 PM. |

Personally, I find all of the mythology that I've seen and heard to be b-o-r-i-n-g. It can't keep my attention. I suppose that if I'm to be considered sophisticated and cultured and all like that that I should pretend that I like it. Norse mythology, especially, because Norwegian is the largest single part of my genealogy. Now, the Vikings . . . . my Viking cousins were pretty cool, even if they were vicious and violent murderers and thieves (until they settled down a lot). Was Odin not in the Marvel movies?
