Sony Reader Library for PC reads BN books!

I just downloaded a free sample of "Every Man Dies Alone" from my Barnes and Noble account in the new ePub format to the new Barnes and Noble Desktop Reader.

Then I opened up my Sony Reader Library 3.1 and imported the file from the BN directory on my PC.

I was suprised to see that I can read it in the Sony software and even enter bookmarks and notes for it from there. Thus, there is every possiblity that I can read them in the new PRS 900 BC from Sony.

I can now shop for prices and books between BN and Sony and buy from the cheapest source. Then I can use my Sony software and PRS 900 to read them. That is amazing. Only Amazon stays out of this new universe.

Please be sure to report back whether you can buy books at B&N and load them onto the 900 and read them. I, for one, am most interested.

I can read the sony ePubs on my 505 and 300. The 505 and Sony will not however work with ePubs from BN.

Free samples are almost always DRM-free. This does not necessarily mean that you can read full ebooks this way.

If the DRMed ePubs from B&N is using Adept, then you can use them with your Sony Reader.

Unfortunately, it was a one shot deal

I was able to read that one BN sample but I downloaded a second BN sample and could not read it in my Sony 3.1 software.

Thus, it may have been a one shot deal prior to BN finally inserting copy protection.

However, after I receive my PRS 900 I will test each BN book I decide to read (cheaper or not available from Sony) for use with the Sony PC 3.1 software and the PRS 900. It may be that some but not all books can be read this way.

The reason the other sample is not reading with Reader Library is that it's eReader format. B&N are silently upgrading to ePub with new eBooks being ePub. And noplace on the site does it say what's going on.

B&N Has said the following (although not really shouted it from rooftops):

- The B&N Store is migrating entirely to ePub (when they don't say, though, hence the stealth part)
- They are not giving up the password-based authentication
- Adobe is pushing out a new version of ACS and the device SDK to support the password-based authentication (B&N seems to get a pre-release version of it)

Of course, not being noisier about it, they are causing problems for users that don't have ePub-enabled reader apps on their computer (need to redownload, but nobody told them to), and so on.
