Archive.org only downloadable as lcpl?
Seems that archive.org has made all its downloadable books only readable via Thorium (or some other lcpl reader, whatever that may be). No more downloadable pdfs or epubs.
So how do we get those lcpl books into a form usable on the Kindle or other digital reader? |

Unless you downloaded a copy of the DeDRM tools from before January 2022 when Readium used a DMCA takedown request to force the removal of LCP support, you can't.

What does this mean? InternetArchive.org is an important source of free books but they have now switched to lcpl (Thorium) which cannot be converted to any other format or be de-drmed as far as I know.

If it's important to you, then you'll have to read IA books on a device that supports LCP. Some users have reported that Readium has updated LCP since the DeDRM takedown, so even if you have the old version of DeDRM with LCP support, you can't remove the current version of LCP. Perhaps somebody will defeat the current LCP eventually, but until that happens, your options are to read books on a device that supports LCP or to get your books elsewhere.

I guess this is the end of downloadable books from internetarchive.org. Still a great source for reading online, however.

It's also the end of books from NetGalley. I've just been notified they will now only allow Readium LDP downloads which aren't (currently) supported by Kobo. That effectively means that I won't be bothering to request review copies any more, nor will I be able to access certain titles in the Hugo packets which are delivered via NetGalley (generally Seanan McGuire's offerings).

I've installed the portable version of calibre, copied my settings over, installed the LCPL Input Plugin, the old version of DeDRM, configured DeDRM to handle the passphrase, and away went the DRM. This is with Windows. If I'm allowed. I can upload the plugin to a download site (legal) and post the URL. The URL will expire. So there's no need to do anything other then wait for it to expire. Yes, same. Kobo readers are a big part of the market but the don't seem to be a supported device at NetGalley anymore. I've emailed support but I'm not holding out much hope.

Thank you for the suggestion. I would really rather not have to buy a dedicated device to read NetGalley arcs. My preferred reader is Kobo. It's not like it's even particularly niche or anything. It seems poor form on NetGalley's part to cut Kobo readers out. I'm hoping they change that. We'll see what their CS says!
