Great book, but I don't see what is meaningful about it. Incidentally, you might like Bridge of Years by Robert Charles Wilson. It has similarities, and is a very good book IMO.

On reflection, what the heck makes science-fiction meaningful anyway? I guess it means it deals with "serious" issues, whatever serious is. Left Hand of Darkness is gender and tyranny. Banks is maybe Socialism and AI, or something. Not sure what, but it's pretty political, religious etc.
