Cookbook Conversion
Using Calibre, I converted a cookbook from mobi to epub. On my Sony 950 and the Reader software some of the fractions (thirds and eighths) appear as question marks.
It looks fine in other epub viewers. Is this a font issue? |

Yep. The font on the reder is missing some characters.

Four possible fixes possible for this . . .
1) Use a custom CSS inside the EPUB to embed a font that has the necessary characters. 2) Use Calibre to convert to LRF instead, and embed a font that has the necessary characters inside the LRF (Calibre can handle this for you, so this may be the simplest). 3) Convert your cookbook into a format that can be loaded into OpenOffice (LibreOffice) and save it as a PDF with the proper font embedded. (use the drop-down menu 'export as PDF' and select 'embed standard fonts'). 4) Just un-zip and edit the EPUB file and replace the single characters that don't work with the appropriate multi-character equivalents "1/2", "1/4", "1/8" etc. To do this you can either download the free EPUB editor Sigil and use it to edit your epub directly, or alternately, simply change the .epub extension to .zip; then unzip the folder, find the HTML or XHTML file, and edit with a text editor; then zip everything back up and change the .zip extension back to .epub Last edited by delphin; 08-03-2011 at 03:04 AM. |

5) use prs plus to make all epubs use your prefered fonts instead of the defaults ones and load a font that will handle the fractions.

I prefer to fix the ebook file, not the reader. That way, my ebooks will read correctly on any reader, not just my Sony. Last edited by delphin; 08-05-2011 at 12:10 AM. |

Thanks guys. I believe you can use calibre to explode the epub, and put it back together after editing the html.
