Animated Avatars
I like seeing images besides posters names, but I cannot stand those that are animated; the constant flickering of them draws my eye to them and distracts me from reading the thread.

Well, we do allow animated avatars, but we can also exercise discretion in regard to them. You could report any you find especially annoying; I can't guarantee that we'd have the poster replace it.

I turn avatars off at times in the Options. I’ve got some neurological issues including mild nystagmus, and sometimes animations can cause vertigo for me.
I don’t know if it works here, but back when I always used a computer for internet, the ESC key on the keyboard would freeze animations on a web page. Someone on this forum has an avatar with crawling ants on it. That one is particularly problematic for my eyes for some reason. But the option to turn them off is there when I need it. |

The ESC key works for me on Win7 and Win8, using Internet Explorer and Opera. I use it to swat the crawling bugs and jitterbugging emoties. Ugh!

I used to turn them off in Firefox using about:config, but then the Scientific American website began using something that made it unusable with that setting. Now I have to endure them while I read as quickly as possible so I can scroll them off the screen. Needless to say, anyone or any site that sticks their jiggling, jittering crap in my face loses a great deal of goodwill with me.
Is there a setting on these forums that will turn them off? |

That’s your choice: see avatars and put up with animation, or don’t see avatars.

For me, most avatars convey very little useful information, so I turn them all off.

If you use a browser with an ad blocker, you can block specific avatars you don't wish to see.
