God of Liberty: A Religious History of the American Revolution, by Thomas Kidd.

$3.99. Print list price $18.99.

321 pages.

Highly to very highly rated (Amazon & Goodreads).

At the dawn of the Revolutionary War, America was already a nation of diverse faiths-the First Great Awakening and Enlightenment concepts such as deism and atheism had endowed the colonists with varying and often opposed religious beliefs. Despite their differences, however, Americans found common ground against British tyranny and formed an alliance that would power the American Revolution. In God of Liberty, historian Thomas S. Kidd offers the first comprehensive account of religion's role during this transformative period and how it gave form to our nation and sustained it through its tumultuous birth -- and how it can be a force within our country during times of transition today.

Addition to the Online Bible Study Website List.

I did a non-scientific poll of what your favorite online Bible study websites are, back some time ago. I think the last post was message #958 on December 11, 2020 (ack! I've found out that the old adage is true: the older you get, the faster time does seem to go by). Thanks to all of you who participated.

(Someone posted a message stating that they wondered why I didn't include online versions of desktop apps. The reason is simple: it was just not in the purview of the poll. Anyway, he posted online versions of two desktop apps: Biblia.com, and the Tercarta Bible. I commend them to you.)

There is a new site that I ran across that I wish to add to the list. It is the Bible Truth Library. It is helpful, and has some nice, unique features.

This website is sectarian. I do not say that pejoratively, only to make you aware that the supplementary articles, books, etc. will reflect the viewpoints of one particular denomination (in this case, it is that of the Plymouth Brethren). But I think that you will find that many--if not most--of those supplementary "helps" will be helpful to you, regardless of what denomination, if any, you belong to.

Deuteronomy in the Old Testament Library Series--Now Only $2.99!

An "odd" volume of the Old Testament Library commentary series is on sale now for only $2.99. The print list price of the paper version is $55.00.

It is the Old Testament Library's Deuteronomy volume. This is not the 1966 volume by Gerhard von Rad, but the 2002 edition, written by Richard D. Nelson.

Ratings at both Amazon and GoodReads are great. Maybe a better indicator of this commentary's quality is that it is ranked #10 at BestCommentaries.com, quite a feat considering the plethora of commentaries on Deuteronomy "out there."

If this is something that sounds of interest to you, navigate to this Amazon webpage for more information.

The Harvest Handbook of Bible Lands--Only $1.99.

The full name: The Harvest Handbook of Bible Lands: A Panoramic Survey of the History, Geography and Culture of the Scriptures.

Print list price $39.99; Kindle price right now $1.99. 406 pages.

I've scanned through this tome, and the visuals are frequent and stunning. It's no wonder it gets a 4.7 star rating at Amazon.

One problem with such books is that they quickly go out of date, as new archaeological discoveries are made, etc. This book was published only just over a year ago.

In exchange for giving them your email address to receive their bulletin, the National Association of Evangelicals will send you a copy of When God and Science Meet: Surprising Discoveries of Agreement.

Ten different people have contributed to this 72-page book.

To take advantage of this offer, point your browser (does anyone actually use those words anymore?) to this webpage. You'll note that you can get the book in color PDF or b/w PDF.

Free!--Wayne Grudem's System Theology: An Introduction to Biblical Doctrine.

I was rummaging around the Internet Archive, a little while ago, and found the first edition of Wayne Grudem's Systematic Theology: An Introduction to Biblical Doctrine. Amazingly, it is not just a loaner, but is free--you get to keep it.

This 1994 edition is still available for sale, at least at Amazon. It is a $40 ebook there!

There is a second edition of this book (it is not free from the Internet Archive) at Amazon. Don't let this necessarily put you off--sometimes a first edition of a book is actually better than (a) subsequent edition(s). And the facts on this subject of this book do not change much over the years.

The book ostensibly is available in several formats, including PDF, ePub, and mobi. The PDF looks fine; the mobi is a mess. I can't say how the ePub turns out, because I haven't been able to open an ePub on my computer, for some reason.

Here is the direct web address for the book.

Thanks, the PDF is fine but the ePub looks like a bunch of pictures of the pages and is 496MB and unusable as apposed to 137MB for the PDF.

Ran across a website, a little while ago, that I don't remember seeing before for some reason.

It's the website of the Digital Bible Society. It has Bible translations in a ton of languages, along with a few other nice features.

In the English, there are about 30 translations. Many of these are readily available elsewhere, but some may not be.

Digital Bible Society.

FREE PDF of Converting American Buddhism. Amazon Wants $29.99 for the Paperback.

FREE, from the Claremont (School of Theology) Press . . . . a PDF of Converting American Buddhism: Second-Generation Buddhist Americans, Orientalism, and the Politics of Family Religion. It's a $29.99 (paperback) book at Amazon.

It only tangentially belongs in the "Christian Interest" subforum:
This book starts with a mystery. Even though the children of Buddhist American converts likely outnumber their parents, neither Buddhist practitioners nor academics have discussed the experiences of second-generation Buddhists in the United States. Why this absence of ink? Why are second-generation Buddhist Americans invisible?

Drew Baker addresses these questions by reconstructing the cultural history of Buddhist American converts and their children from the 1950s to the present. This study covers a wide range of popular narratives—including Jack Kerouac’s novels, parenting manuals, films like Little Buddha, and essays and autobiographies by second-generation Buddhist Americans.

This cultural history reveals that white Buddhist American converts’ power and visibility has been reinforced by the Orientalist idea of the monk-convert lineage which presents the convert—represented as a free white young adult—as the sole heroic incarnation of the present and future of Buddhism in the modern world. The children of these converts are invisible under this paradigm. By considering their stories, Baker demonstrates that the converts’ children cultivate strategies that invoke the authority of their parents against itself so that they might be recognized as true Buddhist Americans. The children are here to claim their inheritance.

To obtain this book free, navigate to this Claremont Press webpage. Select "Read Open Access." If given a choice on the webpage that comes up, select the download option instead of a print-to-PDF, or somesuch, option.

H.C. Leupold's massive Exposition of Genesis (2 volumes) is now available from CCEL.org. It's free (as I think all of CCEL's downloads are).

CCEL (Christian Classics Ethereal Library) states:
H.C. Leupold’s two volumes on Genesis I and II have been praised by scholars as being "everything an exegetical work ought to be . . . ."

This commentary is conservative, as all of the books that CCEL reprints are, as far as I know.

I don't know how CCEL snagged such a prize yet, as this book was copyrighted only back in 1942 (generally, only copyrighted books prior to 1924 (or thereabouts) are now in the public domain), but I'm sure glad of it. One can only hope that CCEL or someone else will be able to launch a reprint of Leupold's (massive) work on Psalms, and his commentaries on Daniel, Zechariah, and Ecclesiastes, in the near future.

The commentary is available to read online, or to download as a PDF or "Microsoft Word html w/o markup".

Thanks. I hadn't read that.

I'm trotting over, in just a second, to see if these were used by permission (vs being in the public domain); if so, I'll delete them.

I had noticed that Archive.org offered the two Genesis volumes (only) for borrowing (only).

I've owned the paper-based volumes since I was pretty young. I've always got those to turn to.

FREE--Recovering Biblical Manhood and Womanhood: A Response to Evangelical Feminism.

Get Recovering Biblical Manhood and Womanhood: A Response to Evangelical Feminism by John Piper and Wayne Grudem, free. The Kindle mobi is $27.99.

The blurb:
A controversy of major proportions has spread through the church. Recent generations bear witness to the rise of "evangelical feminism"-a movement that has had a profound impact on all of life, challenging some of our basic Christian beliefs.

In this new edition of an influential and award-winning best-seller, more than twenty men and women have committed their talents to produce the most thorough response yet to this modern movement. Combining systematic argumentation with popular application, this volume deals with all of the main passages of Scripture brought forward in this controversy regarding gender-based role differences.

Anyone concerned with the fundamental question of the proper relationship between men and women in home, church, and society will want to read this book. New preface included.

Download it free in mobi, PDF, and/or ePub, here.

Reading Moses; Seeing Jesus: How the Torah Fulfills Its Goal in Yeshua. FREE.

By Seth D. Postell, Eitan Bar, Erez Soref.

Price free, PDF only. 128 pages.

Amazon has a "second edition," which is free for Kindle Unlimited members ($3.99 to buy). A paperback edition is available for $16.95.

Rated 4.8/5.0 at Amazon, where it is a "bestseller"; rated 4.53, 4.42 at GoodReads.

Description (from Amazon)
This book addresses the questions about the believer's relationship to the Torah (the five Books of Moses, or the Pentateuch) and its commandments (the Law):

- Since Jesus kept the Law, are believers (Jewish and Gentile) also obliged to keep the Law, or at least some portions of it (Sabbath, the food laws, etc.)?
- What about the Oral Law (rabbinic traditions)?
- How does the Torah point to the Messiah?
- How do we apply the Law of Moses today?

Though this book is based on more than a decade of academic research, it is written with the non-academic reader in mind and provides easy-to-understand answers to the questions related to the Torah and does so in a manner thoroughly rooted in a careful reading of the biblical text.
