Aiptek Ebook reader
Netbook News is visiting Taiwan this week, and they came across an ebook reader that's only available in Taiwan. They took a few minutes to shoot a hands on video:
I went looking for more information rather than simply post their video. This device is by Aiptek, maker of digital video cameras, LCD screens, and other small electronic devices. Coincidentally, Aiptek is an exhibitor at CES 2010. I will certainly stop by their booth. I also found a number of other Youtube videos posted by Aiptek, including one on the ebook reader: I also found the support site Aiptek created for their ebook reader. They also opened an ebook store. Last but not least, here is an Ebay auction for the device. I got the following specs from the auction:

This eBook reader has just 2 hours battery life and same screen that regular netbook
(I can't read more than 20 minuts from netbook screen). Maybe some kids will enjoy it... |

Yes it's a toy that parents can use as a sort of modular storybook with their kids. It's a device that is intended to be used in a classroom or at home, where it can be readily charged and used for a limited-time sitting.
As far as the LCD, it's the best option right now for such a device, until flexible color OLED screens become more affordable. Taiwan's ebook market is quite immature and unexplored. There are a good number of devices being made and developed here, but there aren't that many being sold domestically. Most one of the ones proposed for the Taiwan market are pretty much as pedestrian in performance and abilities as you can get, and never quite make it to the public. The Story Book seems to be selling a bit more though, perhaps because it's attractive to parents. |
